Is this the best opening three rounds for Super Rugby in years?
For sure Anti, 3 rounds in and only one undefeated team makes for a great comp! The hardest part is picking in tips etc, I persoanalyy love the fact that some of the Aussie teams are really putting hands up.

Footy is good, results are largely unpredictable. Just need thr punters and the media to recognise it really

I went to a Sunwolves home game in Tokyo and the crowd was good and definitely into it. They were even doing a wolf howl, so I think the concept and team name worked well enough to create a following.
I think they just need more funding and perhaps a few marque international players, if they had been as competitive as the Jaguares they would probably still be around.

I want to love it, I should love it, and deep down I know it's good.
But I enjoyed watching them continually get flogged. Fuck 'em.

SANZAAR funded them first few years, once that deal ended JRU refused to take that place. Thus they got ditched

@Crazy-Horse I don't think it does, probably only the Crusaders come back to the field, but I don't think they are too far off, they had plenty of chances yesterday,just failed to catch the ball, win lineouts, some of the youngsters struggling to adapt.
Gonna be an interesting few weeks for them as they rebuild.

@taniwharugby it doesn't get any harder than playing the Canes, Chiefs and Blues in succession. Will be interesting to see where they are after round 6.

Even with the SANZAAR funding, they were pushing shit uphill unless they had a huge budget / connection to a company.
The JP players for the company teams may not get paid absolutely huge sums, but they are also part of the Japanese firm for life (essentially), likely getting very cushy post-rugby gigs with the corporation.
For that reason (amongst others), the SWs had trouble getting the best JP talent, and they didn't have the resources to attract the best foreign talent, who went to the JP league for bigger money and easier footy.
There are plenty of Japanese rugby fans @LABCAT - it would be one market where there could be two games a weekend and they might sell out depending on the opposition. I think we missed a huge opportunity by not trying to get 5-6 teams in a Japanese pool.

Not for me.
'm happy with a well-run SRP (that means even teams -> less Aust sides, attractive rugby without rules and refs f++king it up and great promotion etc) with only 12 teams. Thats enough. 12 teams worked before and it became a failure when it started expanding.

@Winger hasn't been 12 teams since 2005. I agree that was 'tight' - but it was so successful that Aus and SA wanted more teams.
Japan's timezones work for us. The issue is the seasons (as always); playing in summer in Japan is somewhat challenging. Like playing in Fiji

We can try this outside of SPR. Say some sort of knockout competition. Prefderable a world competition in some years

Recruitment agency Robert Walters was used to do a lot of the early heavy lifting, before a committee comprising Malloy, NZ Rugby director Rowena Davenport, Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh and Justin Harrison, the chief executive of the Rugby Unions Players’ Association in Australia, reduced the list of candidates to four.
“We’ve had one meeting, we've gone from eight to four,” Malloy said..
“We have a meeting again next week and with the intention of probably getting to two, and the final two will go in front of the full [Super Rugby Pacific] board.”
Interestingly, Malloy said that the four remaining candidates didn’t “necessarily” possess a rugby background, with marketing skills and expertise in fan engagement seen as crucial.
This would appear to open the door for someone such as the highly regarded Justin Nelson, the Australian who has worked wonders with the NBL in New Zealand. However, Malloy wouldn’t be drawn if Nelson was in the mix.

It's a lesson that should be at the forefront of the SRP Pacific Board. Keep it at 12 teams. And don't let Aust's ego (wanting the same teams as NZ) destroy it. Or a big-headed Board

Why not 12 teams split 4/4/4? The old way. I mean, SA is gone, so we're stuffed, but thatw ould have worked and been fairest.
Aus would have had to choose at the time to take Perth or Melbourne. NZ loses the Highlanders - which must have had the lowest popiulation base by a margin of any Super side
