Like Deans, it's a brave move. Same news cycle as NZ, our closest neighbour, and if he gets good we suffer. Really hope they got the chequebook out.

Must have been something weird with NZR for him to shoot off to Aus.

Yeah it has that feel about it that something has crashed and burned between Schmidt and the NZR.

Why make something out of it, he was offered a job, and there wasn't equivilant in NZ so he took it. Don't forget NZR offeref him a crack at ABs when Foster got gig, he at that stage had decided head coaching (at test level) wan't for him for a while, and so he had break, Foster wi=orked a while to get him back in test arena. Rumour is he wasn't interested in working with Razor, so no probs.
I say all the best to him, and not being nasty, but he is coaching anther country's test team, so is basically dead to me(and not wishing him any ill will)

He actually didn't want to talk to razor whilst still deputy to foster, when NZR were looking at kicking foster out

@Machpants yep mate, actually from what I have heard, he wasn't really interested in being assistant to anyone but Foster. Him and Fozzie mates from well back and all that, and it was Foster that actually got him back on board. Haven't heard it was actually heard he had probelm with Razor.

Rumour going around Joe Schmidt is the new Australian coach.

That would surprise me given they're yet to formally announce their head of performance, to whom the coach would report.

    Were you really surprised ?.

Yeah considering they made a big deal about getting some proper administration back in to the place. Now all they've achieved is alienating the other applicants.

Like it or not kiwis, we need Aussie to be good. And alive. The ONLY way that is happening is if the Wallabies can win shit. Starting with the Bledisloe, and then the Lions.

GTFO. I hope they never win the Bledisloe again. They can beat the Lions 3-0 but that doesn't bring crowds back to Super Rugby which is where the problems lie.

If Joe can't win the Bledisloe back, and then they get humped 3-0 by the Lions, and fail at their home World Cup, then we're all alone at the ass end of nowhere, and economics will crush us.

It might also put the shits up NZ rugby a little if we have to actually work to win stuff down here again.

I have my reasons which I have outlined previously. My petty grudge has lasted 43 years ... Was prepared to let it ride while he was helping us. But fuck him now.

    Otherwise I'd agree with you.

Yeah, it's nice to not like the Oz coach, when Rennie was coach I both wanted us to smash them but them to do well for him.

@mariner4life is Larkham likely to be an assistant, that'd be a smart move.

As much fun it is kicking beaten wallabies, we all know we need a strong Aus, if this helps, great.

This is not very surprising news. It's been rumoured for a while.

    Plus sides for the Wallabies

    Experienced international coach.
    Not a total dick.
Comes with lots of IP from Ireland and the All Blacks.
Seems liked and will probably bring in decent assistant coaches.

    Downsides:

    He's a Kiwi.
    He's not a great innovator.

I think Australia will do a wee bit better under Schmidt but I don't think they'll reclaim the Bledisloe in the next two years or defeat the Lions.

Even the exchange rate isn’t that good these days….

    Good luck to Joe.

One thing that might be going for him in comparison to say Deans and Rennie is that there will be less of a spotlight on him than the other two. The NZ coach saviour novelty/complex is not there even with all the structural and other problems.

The EJ episode exposed plenty in a really public way (and not just about Eddie), so I would say that expectations are at an all time low. Joe spoke well in the presser and he’s a bit of an old school realist.

Great move for Oz, clearly one of the best coaches around and available

Stink for NZ to lose him, but we can hardly expect all our top coaching talent to sit idle and not operate on the biggest stages

Let’s hope for spectacular success against all non-NZ sides leading to him taking over after Razors unbeaten 8 year reign

Smart move by Oz. Not just a great coach but, importantly, the antithesis of the loudmouth shyster that is Eddie Jones.

Damn, so harsh on the coach who gave you two Super trophies. 😉

I guess the Aussie job was less jarring for me as he'd already coached the Poo so pretty much the same thing to someone from the Bay.

This seems like a good fit tbh. Aus rugby needs to start from scratch and Schmidt is the kind of solid if unspectacular coach they need after the Jones debarcle.

Joe is merely going to coach the Wallabies. It's not on the same level as say Luis Figo leaving FC Barcelona to join rivals Real Madrid back in the day. Settle down, folks.

I wonder if Joe will pull Kerr-Barlow into the Wallabies camp. Tbh the way Kerr-Barlow controls the game for La Rochelle these days would really help the WBs against the Lions. It would also give some of those WB 9s a huge reality check.

That's why I find it easier for them to be dead to me. Once they coach another test team, I just shrug my shoulders. Was same when Schmidt coached Irelend, with Rennie, Mitchell, Henry, Hansen when they did other teams. Just wern't on my radar. honestly don't have a big problem with them, but can't bring myself to cheer for other teams in test arena.
