    Funny (CricInfo):

Ben's retort to those wanting Nicholls to be dropped: "Picking Nicholls over Ravindra is clearly the right call - getting frustrated at people who want to drop the guy with a career average of 38 two games off 200*, just because Ravindra is the latest hottest thing (with 6 innings under his belt and a best of 18*). Ravindra will have his time."

Geoff counters: "In the last 2 years away from New Zealand, Nicholls has averaged 14.77 with the bat with a high score of 30. Batting at number 11 Ajaz Patel has averaged 15.66 with a high score of 35."

Santner in for Sodhi. No Ravindra.

Bangaldesh won the toss and will bat. Fourth innings meltdown looms without us getting a big first innings lead.

    One ineffectual spinner replaces another.

But the silver lining is the batting will supposedly be stronger.

I feel like the Black Caps never win a toss…

That stuff article about Nichols summed things up nicely, unfortunately very true.

To be fair, Ish got a chance and didn't quite take it. If Santner doesn't take his chance, he'll not do much worse...

One thing I'll always cut him a bit of slack for: without Satnav's caught and bowled at Bay Oval late on Day 5 v Pakistan, we might not have even got the the Test Championship final. It looked so set for a draw I didn't even go to the ground till late...

Yeah that was a pretty special moment it has to be said.

Sodhi made his debut ten years ago ! I just realised this when I looked up his stats. I thought it was much more recent. Only 20 tests in that period which says it all.

Strange how they give more leeway to some and not others.

Sodhi could have been a different bowler if he’d been allowed to string some games together.

We’re really missing a trick by not playing Ravindra.

Issue for Sodhi is that his bowling has never quite been consistent enough in most forms of the game, for all the potential.

But if his name had been Henry Nicholls, he'd have been inked in for the last five years...

Yeah but he was never going to play much at home especially when SBW were at their peak and when Jamieson emerged.

I guess he was seen as more of a prospect than Mark Craig though.

I will say one thing about NZ spinners, all of them can at least bat a bit to detract from how inept they are at their main job.

I think it's stupid selecting by NZ over the duration.

I look at Nathan Lyon. Yes, he took 5 on debut. But he got start in Sri Lanka. But he didn't come in to the team as a star, in fact my memory of him is being pretty workmanlike
    But they stuck with him.
Now he's played 122 times and is closing in on 500 test wickets at 31. There are an awful lot of 0 and 1 wicket innings in that 120-odd tests, but he's still there.
And oh look, he also developed in to a bit of a brick wall lower order batsman.

We seem to pick spinners who can bat, and when they aren't warnie straight up, we cut them.

    Settle down, be realistic.

Lyon is one of those guys who I always felt "how does this guy take wickets", but he's a bloody good bowler. Probably spoilt by watching Warnie's career, and expecting everything to turn square.

We've ended up with three spinners, all basically only used away, and no clear favourite. Probably Ajaz, but...

And as I type, Ajaz joins Santner in the wicket column

29/2, we’ve got them in a similar position to the start of the last test.

    Can we capitalise this time?

What a start for our spin twins ! It’s like having Warnie and Murali in the same team !!!

Really pleased to see Santner given a chance. He showed some lovely flight in his bowling at the ODI World Cup that showed potential for more than just an economical/holding bowler in tests. Add in his batting and fielding too.

Apparently the 8th in test history. Wow. Second time he tried to touch the ball with his hand. Weird.

Ah yeah steady on. Everyone who plays cricket bats and fields at some stage. Not really a point of difference.

Phillips! Not just a batsman... 123-6.

Now we need to bat on this pitch
