CWC Semi-final 1: India v New Zealand

NZ's seventh successive Semi-final apparently, and one win away from our third successive Final.
Unfortunately I can't shake the feeling we're the Argentina of this group of Semi-finalists.
Seems there's not much in the way of weakness in that Indian team, but they're not unbeatable.
So how do we beat them?
Who's in? Who's out? What's this pitch like? Do we need extra spin option? Or stick with three seamers?
I seek the knowledge and experience of The Fern.

Not always necessary. I seem to recall we lost recently after scoring 200 more runs than the opposition.
Your insight is however, as always, appreciated.

We were pretty competitive in the round robin game vs India.
Gut feeling says we are better off chasing - we couldn't even defend 400 when we batted first vs Pakistan.
Nearly a week between games for Black Caps could prove problematic.

We seem to match up well with India. We could have won the RR match, and based on recent history we might be living rent free in their heads a little. Just have to put it all together for one game

To elaborate more…..runs shouldn’t be an issue. It’s our popgun pie chucking bowlers that concern me

Tha Pakistan game is exhibit A. Our batsmen must get pretty pissed off after a game like that

Yeah true, Journeymen can only journey so far ( notwithstanding some top efforts vs Sri Lanka )
NZ has guys that are a bit past it or never there in the first place. The Indian batsmen will be licking their lips.

We’ve had someone timed out in this World Cup so we could always have someone do a Maradona and get out handled the ball I guess.
-
Pleased we got India. Even if we can't win the whole thing, knocking India out would be down right hilarious. We have nothing to lose, just like the ABs against Ireland..
-
Yeah me too. We can roll these guys and I reckon we will.
-
The theory of this tournament has been to bat first, put a huge total on the board and watch the batting side collapse under the pressure.
Until unfortunately we played Pakistan...
I still however think it's the right way to go, pressure has much more dramatic effects on a batting team than a bowling one (and by that I mean you make one mistake as a batsman and your out, whereas a bowler you go for 4/6).
Wont be the end of the world if we bowl first as our batsmen are in much better form than our bowling attack. Though I would say to win a chase we will need some luck or some bad Indian fielding

Still think that we could have won that if weather hadn't intervened. They needed 200 at a good clip.
We royally fucked it up against SA by choosing to chase as well (and SA are shit at chasing, so who knows why Latham did that).
Conversely, we probably would have run down the Aussies if Henry hadn't given them a 14 run head start (off zero balls effectively) by not knowing how long a cricket pitch is. One no ball I might have forgiven (even for seven runs) but 2 consecutively FFS. We lost by 5. Thanks Matt.
There was a stat a week or two back that 70% of WC games this year had been won by the team that lost the toss. So losing the toss is a good start to winning. That might have been when they were all paranoid about dew that wasn't going to happen and bowling first though.
Upshot of all that? No idea.

Worse we dropped 3 catches in the last 10 overs that cost us at least 30 runs.
you can not win any game dropping set batsmen in the last 10 overs. -

I think we are in with a great chance. That's NZ's best top order that we've seen for some time, it only takes two of them to fire and we are in with a good shout of making a large total.
It's all really down to the performance of our bowlers. Bowl well against this in form Indian lineup, and we are definitely in the hunt.

That's a fair assessment. India is by some distance the best team at this World Cup.
But, the best team doesn't always win.
I wouldn't mind if they bat first because there's always the chance that they think they need to score more than they really do and push too hard. e.g. us vs Oz in 2015.
One small weakness is their success so far. Jadeja will bat at 7 for them and he's only faced 96 balls in this whole Cup - and the four guys below him have collectively only faced 49 balls. So IF we can make inroads on their top order, their lower order might fall over for us.
Big IF.

Is this correct?
The 6th out the last 7 tournaments would have been South Africa 2003, and didn't we miss the semis because we didn't go to Nairobi?

It really is. We don’t even miss Rossco, outstanding player that he was.
-
@Rapido yup Kenya made the semi's instead.
NZ and Oz have both been semifinalists in 9 out of the 13 CWC tournaments.
India eight.
the other two sides have a slightly better success rate from that point on
-
So does Neesham get to play?
Based on the selections so far I would say no, but I'd be tempted to play him over Southee.
He won't win us the match with his bowling but could with his batting , whereas Southee probably ain't going to do much.
-
Whilst our top order has in form and quality batsmen, this Indian ODI bowling lineup is about as good as I’ve seen from any Indian team in my lifetime. Good mix of pace, spin and slower ball bowling.
Big challenge for our top order.

Thanks to Dennis Lille and then Craig McDermott having pace bowling academies in 4 main cities for a number of years,
Craig still brings some young quicks over to play in the club system.
Last season we had a 6ft8 young quick for 3 months he was clocking about 145ks but is was the bounce of a short length that was very hard to combat, -
@Chris this is what's impressed me about the current Indian setup. They seem to have a production line of talent. Such a far cry from the old amateur efforts
By comparison, and from the outside, Australia's seems to have fallen back a bit. Sheffield shield not what it was? Pitches look more similar than they used to.
You're the expert, keen on your opinion

Well as I said they are obsessed and spend a fucken fortune so they should be good.
I suppose being a big hostile fiery pace bowler doesn’t come naturally to a lot of diminutive Indians to be fair.

Yes the Sheffield Shield is weaker the Australian players don’t play in it anymore.
So that weakens it somewhat. There is a real fix here in identifying 13/14 years olds and sticking with them through the youth system, which means some potential players slip through the system and get picked up by AFL.
We had a young quick 5 years back who had massive potential was bowling quick for his age but could not break in to the Qld under age teams,he got frustrated after good performances and AFL grabbed him up on a $80,000 contract he now plays AFL for The Brisbane Lions,
I was one of the Qld u/19 coaches and still could not get him in to the system.
But in saying that the volume of cricketers playing in Australia they will always have a gun 30 odd to pick from. -
The scary thing about the Indian system it is corrupt,
Money gets you everywhere and selected in the first class and under age teams.
if it was based on just ability the Indian teams would be unstoppable,I have spent time coaching in a couple of Craig McDermotts academies in India over the last 6 years.
I have seen some very interesting selection practices. -
If the reports of India requesting a slow pitch with all the grass shaved off is correct that will make our bowlers work very hard,The Indian batsmen are going to be able get forward or play from the back crease trusting the bounce and be able to wait for the ball.
Miss line or length and it's over or into the boundary. From a bowling point of view bowling 2nd would be best for NZ hoping to get some movement with the dew if it falls. And a slightly quicker pitch which will help with variations in length and pace.
-
@Chris lol it's hard to fully respect a sport that blatantly tries to give one team an upper hand. The Indians will be almost impossible to beat on a pitch that they've requested so to speak. I can see us batting really well but then getting completely annihilated when we bowl. Hopefully we bat first.

Yeah there’s so much good and bad about Indian cricket.
I do love the incredible passion that the true fans show and massive respect for opposition players.
Then again I can’t stand the blatant one eyed ness of the other kinds of fans ( the Tendulkar is better than Bradman brigade )
The pitch favouritism gives me the shits too, that and our bowling attack gives me major cause for concern.

Yep I have the same feeling,if we win the toss I hope we don't make the same mistake we did against SA and bowl first.

Looking at the stats from previous games in Mumbai, you need to win the toss and bat first. Williamson needs to call correctly.

Williamson and Stead might want to read this.
The lucky winner of the toss at the Wankhede Stadium seems set to bat first – South Africa made 399-7 and 382-5 doing so against England and Bangladesh respectively, while India tallied 357-8 verus Sri Lanka. Batting second, England were rolled for 170 versus the Proteas while Sri Lanka collapsed to 55 all out against the hosts. When Afghanistan made 291-5 versus Australia, our trans- Ta$man neighbours were 91-7 before Glenn Maxwell happened.

Why do I suspect even if we win the toss and they did read this, they would only read "our trans- Ta$man neighbours were 91-7 before Glenn Maxwell happened." So there is a chance..

Indian cricket this sounds familiar it is worth reading the whole article
First there were suggestions India asked for a slow pitch to be prepared. Now, it’s been reported Indian officials have switched the pitch for their crunch World Cup semifinal against New Zealand in Mumbai without the ICC’s permission.
The accusations come ahead of the crunch match, which starts on Wednesday night (NZT) with the winner advancing to Sunday’s final against either Australia or South Africa.
