I hope the Canes will give a NDC to lock Frank Lochore as well. IMO he's the Magpies' most improved player and he's had consistent game time off the bench, this season. They may go for younger Tom Allen though.
Tom ALLEN is a 19-year-old New Zealander rugby player standing at 1.97 m tall (6 ft 6 in) and weighing in at 114 kg (17 st 13.33 lb; 251.33 lb) , who currently plays for Hawke's Bay Magpies in New Zealand as lock.
Frank LOCHORE is a 22-year-old New Zealander rugby player standing at 1.92 m tall (6 ft 4 in) and weighing in at 108 kg (17 st 0.10 lb; 238.10 lb) , who currently plays for Hawke's Bay Magpies in New Zealand as back row.

Young players are only on a NDC for one year. Booth isn't the answer for the Canes so it would make sense if Viljoen has signed a full contract.
I'm not sure that's true.
I thought that the NDC was a NZR-paid initiative (5 players per franchise) each year, and that is different to each team signing players up to lock them in. If I look at who were the Chiefs NDC players there were 5 different players each season. One of them later signed with the Highlanders (Broughton).
My understanding was each team runs a slightly different set-up. For example, the Crusaders have a huge academy, which makes up most of their U20 team, but within that, they have a few players they know they are targeting more.
In contrast, the Highlanders have a certain amount in their high-performance programme, which targets players who are either the best of the best or in a position they feel they will need to feel in the next couple of years. Don't believe NZR funds any of it, though could be wrong.
These contracts nearly always last at least two years, but for most forwards, particularly it is tight ones three. Then they sign Super Rugby contracts, and depending on opportunities, players have still transferred across, but this is happening less.
Of new players to squads last year who were in 'academies', you saw Hotham go from the Highlanders to the Crusaders, Broughton from the Chiefs to the Highlanders, and Kemara from the Chiefs to the Crusaders. In the cases of the latter two, there was no room at the Chiefs, and for Hotham, there was room, but more as an out and out number three, with Fakatava still ahead in the pecking order. I've mentioned before, the NPC as a competition, has become less about Super Rugby teams signing players, and more about players already in Super teams getting developed.

@Winger Lochore isn't playing as a back row; he plays lock for us, but could play back row if they need him there.
Hés a bit short really for a super rugby lock. Almost Blackwell height. Could he play six (Blackwell couldn't). And is he related to BJ

@Stargazer All.rugby has some nice stuff, but it is the same website which reckons TUJ is a fullback.
Still an excellent website though
Thomas UMAGA-JENSEN is a 25-year-old New Zealander rugby player standing at 1.87 m tall (6 ft 2 in) and weighing in at 112 kg (17 st 8.92 lb; 246.92 lb) , who currently plays for Otago in New Zealand as fullback.

We need lock sized locks, not 1.9m blindside flankers that think they are locks. Been there and done that with James Blackwell and we didn’t win anything.
Taula looks to be the perfect size for a lock. I hope they can pull him into line because he could be very effective.

I'm shocked hahaha

@SouthernMann until 2027, whoop whoop. That is an outstanding signing.
Hang on wasn't he going elsewhere?

Agree. Excellent signing
Now Canes need to announce a few more. Including who the new head forward coach is

@Winger and they need to nail down a quality long term first five to partner Roigard. I'm not sure Cameron is the answer.
I still wouldn't mind seeing Barrett at first. With Higgins at 2nd
But Cameron had some great games last year. The coaches just need to work on his confidence a bit. He doesn't seem to like being the main man
-
@Winger I don't think Barrett will move into ten tbh, I think the Canes see him settled at 12. If you're going to shift Jordie it would be to move him back to fullback to accommodate Higgins at 12, and then maybe Love could jump into ten. There will be a few selection dilemmas next year in the backs.
-
No way Jordie moves to 10.
It'll be Cameron at 10, and to be honest he's probably one of the better 10s floating around post Mounga and Barrett.
DMac and Perofeta are probably 1 & 2 next year I'd imagine in the country?
Love could convert but at this stage, he looks more a 15 to me.

Agree. Nota permanent move. But if needed I think he could do well at 10. It will also give game time to Higgins
I certainly wouldn't move JB to FB. Weve got enough options including Sinkinson. Although he seems like no more than NPC level but might improve
