England ahead in the most important stats,
Especially fouls 😉
To be fair, that is one area they did dominate! I think the ref was a bit hometown, so shouldn't have been as one sided, but it was clearly an England tactic to be a bit rough and put them off their game.

Attendances will be about 25,000 short of 2 million presuming they get full houses for the final 2 games. Average of over 30,000 for 64 games. Offloading tickets has to be done through FIFA so people will probably go along anyway and there may be a rush for the 3rd/4th place playoff. Only crowds under 10K were Japan v Costa Rica in Dunedin, Portugal v Vietnam in the Tron, Argentina v South Africa in Dunedin, Costa Rica v Zambia in the Tron and Vietnam v Netherlands in Dunedin. If they have been able to split across 5 centres with a decent sized stadium in Christchurch there would have been no sub-10K games in my opinion.

@NTA think I saw saw 7.1m this morning in an article before Optus..
either way it's still a whopping number for Australian viewers
edit whole article backs up above number (at one point during the game), although accuracy of oztam still in question : https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-08-17/fifa-womens-world-cup-matildas-england-tv-audience/102741074?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_source=abc_news_web

@NTA while I don't doubt the interest for the nation, how the fuck would they know? The methodology for ratings is clearly bullshit (to me).
yeah, i'll take it with a grain of salt, but i do know EVERYONE i talked to yesterday was going to watch, even if only casual interest, was pretty amazing

Does it really matter what the actual figure was? The game was clearly huge in Oz. There were two separate watching parties amongst my group of friends, plus I live near a fanhub and it was madness last night. But as both the above posts note who knows what's true regarding ratings.
I have no interest in soccer (mens or womens) so haven't watched a game but the WC has been pretty massive in both Oz and NZ (for the brief time I was there and the two places I visited).
But I will say I'm looking forward to it being over in grumpy old man fashion, there are too many people on my usual walking routes - including the Matildas and a bunch of photographers yesterday.

Yes it does for some, so they can always point to it being bigger than any AFL or NRL grand final, Cathy Freeman 400m, OZ open etc.
