Best of RWC 2007

Was living in Japan at the time
Tough tournament
-
Probably my least favourite too, despite being runners up and exceeding expectations. My enjoyment of each RWC seems to be correlated more by my expectations than how things turned out, which is odd really.
1987 - no expectations but excited, cos itβs new.
1991 - in a good place.
1995 - in a good place.
1999 - no expectations.
2003 - in a good place.
2007 - no expectations.
2011 - no expectations.
2015 - no expectations but excited as it is a home World Cup.
2019 - in a good place.
2023 - no expectations. -
Tournament of shit rugby saved by the upsets of name teams.
Was in Europe for it. Found a pub in Wroclaw that showed the rugby. Went early to watch the wallabies game. Full of Man U supporters who wouldn't let us change the channel until the football finished.
Cheered wallabies. Copped heckle when they lost
Went back for our game and the fluffybunnies were still there, as well as 2 French dudes. Copped assholes as the inevitable came to pass. French lads were class, but I was dragged out of the pub before I got in a fight I would lose.Ignored the Tournament until I got to Paris for the final week. Tour groups of dejected kiwis everywhere. Gloaty poems pouring over the channel being assholes.
Watched the final at the Eiffel Tower and cheered home the Africans
Drank much to ease my painFuck this Tournament

As for the quarter, I blame the touchies as.much as Barnes. Shit happened right in front of them and they did nothing, they left Wayne all on his own.
Losing both 10s killed us. To win every stat like.yoy should and just not get the points was gut-wrenching.
Fuck this tournament

Absolutely shit house tournament, with the two most boring teams in history in the final. British Isles supporters were at peak chipiness, and the loathing of the ABs was nasty and ubiquitous. Some piece of shit Irish (100% the worst supporters in the world) salesman was in my (London) office and had a go at me about the immoral ABs when he overheard that I was from NZ.
After the QF ended, my brother (foolishly watching the game with his French in-laws in Nice) rang me up crying. My cousin and I watched Red Dawn and Commando, and got very fucking drunk. First thing Monday morning some fat English dickhead in my office, who had never played sports in his life, tried to be a fucking dick about it and was very loudly told to "fuck off and kill himself". What an absolutely shit time, shit tournament, and shit final.

Indeed: "what tournament?"
I was in South America - only saw a few games here and there.
Didn't watch the QF-that-mustn't-be-named - instead, rocked up to an internet cafe (remember those?) - the day after - in Colombia if I recall correctly... knowing that in those days, you could listen to RadioSport delayed... had just lined it up... but with girlfriend sitting next to me scanning headlines... when she said something like "Well... I guess it's just as well we couldn't find anywhere to watch the game then."
I was fucking furious, but over time - realised it was probably for the best.
Can you imagine sitting in a fucking internet cafe listening to that game? -
Pretty much my experience too. I had people I hadn't spoken to in 10+ years ringing me up and asking "Did you watch the Rugby....?"
Had similar experiences with Oirish supporters as you did. To balance that, the Welsh supporters were great and genuinely sympathetic after the game and there was a Pom supporter who got decked by a Saffa for goading anyone in a black shirt...
I also remember driving back and stopping for a pee in some B road in Wiltshire at 2am and screaming "FFUUUUCCCCCKKKKKK!" very, very loudly...

My friends who were at the game said that was the experience they had, except the English fan was dropped by a Welshman.

...tagging this for when we get to 2019... and my numb stumbling around Yokohama.

Key thing is he got decked...

There's likely more than one dickhead supporter. English or otherwise.
-
Oh sure, wasn't having a pop at any genuine supporters - just the fluffybunny one who happened to be English on the night.
As an aside, my last visit to Twickenham was bloody great and well done to the RFU for weeding out the dickheads who frequented the place in the past.

I seem to remember the France-Argentina opener being a good game and I was pleased for some of the England players who had been out with injury for long when they beat France to make the final, but besides that this was a bleak tournament. Very little attacking Rugby, lots of kicking the bits out of the ball and some terrible officiating.
-
Your QF experience was similar to mine (minus the football), except I watched them in Amsterdam with an Aussie and his wife I had met in the pub.
Ignored the Tournament until I got to Paris for the final week. Tour groups of dejected kiwis everywhere.
Yeah, I felt sorry for all those on the Williment tours walking around in their kit. I ended up in the same pub with a number of them (and Ian Kirkpatrick, who was their tour guide) to watch the NPC final.
Other moments I remember include walking past Steve Tew in Toulouse the morning of the NZ-Romania game as he was stuffing his face with a pastry. We bumped into Richard Loe in Paris too.
As I have mentioned previously, the only consolation was making a good profit on my SF and final tickets.

Yeah I had a beer with John Mitchell in Montparnasse. Shorter than I thought

Montparnasse is over a kilometre long, what did you expect?
