Sounds odd that some/all(?) of the facilities will be built anyway. In the SMH:

Daniel Andrews says major sporting facilities will be built, despite the Commonwealth Games’ cancellation.

The Victorian premier confirmed there would be a regional support package for the communities affected by the announcement.

Up to $2 billion will be spent on regional development projects, including housing infrastructure, Andrews said today.

On @booboo's theme of Australia always being ready to step up everytime someone else was struggling, it is kind of ironic. The others always at least delivered something in the end. Even Rio and New Dehli, for all the criticism they got.

Victoria’s Opposition Leader John Pesutto has lashed the decision to cancel the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The state Liberal leader said the decision was “a betrayal of regional Victoria” and said it confirmed the state was broke.

“The Andrews government’s decision to scrap the 2026 Commonwealth Games is a massive humiliation for Victoria,” Pesutto said in a statement.

He said the cancellation was “hugely damaging” to Victoria’s reputation as a global events leader.

Pesutto said the legacy of the “botched Games” would now leave a legacy of failure and missed opportunities for those communities.

He said Labor could not be believed as it “continues to break promises because of its own incompetence”.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I like the Commonwealth Games.

We can likely pick massive holes in anything below the Olympics, World Cups, or Grand Slams and Tour de France etc, but the next tier is still a lot of fun.

Same. It is madness for NZers (who don't have the equivalent/alternatives of Euro Champs or Asian Games etc) to dog on the Comm Games.

I can understand Brits etc not being too fussed, and Aussies have gotten 'too good' for it. But we (our athletes and our bi-ennial spotlight sporting codes) desperately need it.

I'm a fan of the Commonwealth Games. Always some great stories and the host cities embrace them. This just smacks of Melbourne wanting to farking host everything and finally running into economic reality. But they've always been like that. I remember Jeff Kennett fapping on about hosting the soccer world cup in the late 90s.

Brisbane hosting the Olympics though is an absurd joke. Other than those in construction and grifting who will make a killing and make the city even more unaffordable, I don't see much enthusiasm at all.

    From Stuff:

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews has told a press conference the cost of the Games had ballooned out from A$2.6 billion to at least A$6b (NZ$6.5b).

“We have informed Commonwealth Games authorities of our decision to seek to terminate the contract and to not conduct, not host the games,” he told reporters today.

“I cannot stand here and say to you that I have any confidence that even the A$7 billion number would appropriately and adequately fund these games.”

He said it was "not a hard decision", simply saying more than A$6 billion was too much, "we're not doing that".

Sounds like the costings were based on random number generators. Construction costs have inflated, but not by that much...

Looks like typical government costing to me. Completely in fantasy land developed by people without a clue for people who want to tell lies to the public.

FWIW I don't know why they need new facilities for any of it.

@antipodean costings based on 2010 figures by the sound of it…

The whole “take it to the regions” was embarrassingly dumb.

could the Goldie put their hand up to take it? They did a great job last time, we went to a bunch of stuff - the outdoor evening swimming was a highlight. Presume they still have sufficient infra to get 80% of the way there?

good. The comm games are dogshit anyway.

Qld should fuck the olympics off as well

You know I would like to ardue mariner, but I agree, especially about Comm games, and anyone who hold Olympics, should say we will have them , but not paying exorbitant amounts for all the bullshit at opening and closing ceremonies, as well as let everyone do their events without all the extras. And cut down on events, how many different swimming or every version of other sports? Running, 100m,400m, 1500 and marathon is plenty. Gymnastics etc f*** off, golf , sailing etc?

I like the Commonwealth Games. I also like being around when they are hosted.

Zero chance of the first games of King Charles’ reign not happening so it will be interesting to see where these end up.

They were certainly there when I drove past on Saturday. Seems there must have been an outcry about the cost of removal. Pretty certain there would have been an outcry about them being built in the first place if people had actually been informed about it.

If the Commonwealth Games survive this, I wonder if they might end up in a permanent venue in the UK. Or perhaps revolving around 2 - 4 cities every four years so that big upgrades aren't always required.

Am in two minds about what it might mean for Victoria bidding for any future global events. On one hand maybe it is 'just' the Commonwealth Games and no-one looks too closely in the future. On the other hand, if they ever pitch for anything major (other than the major stuff they already have), I suspect the event owners may be checking their out clauses much more closely...

Until KL in 98 I think the only time it was held outside of the UK, Aus, NZ or Canada was Kingston in 66. So generally it's always been in England or the "dominions".

    Probably true:

This Brit loves it, because Wales gets to compete in its own right

Plus there are sports in the Comms which aren't in the Olympics

    e.g. Squash
Last men's final, NZ v Wales

Always strikes me that it's fucking madness not to get the previous host involved in the planning process

They have literally just done it and can give REAL WORLD advice and 'learnings'

I suspect Sunak will find some ‘levelling-up’ money to host these in the NW or NE of England. Local mayors will jump at the chance too.

Excellent. The XXIII Commonwealth Games in Hartlepool will see a massive upgrade to the 7k capacity of the Vic.

As amusing as that is, I get the feeling they realised they wouldn't have the infrastructure ready in time.
