I think deep down all us Canes fans know we're going to be underwhelmed by the appointment.

Why do I have a suspicion that the Blues and Crusaders will get top coaches and Canes will just get someone like Gibbes?

Because the Canes are short sighted and usually promote internally even when the coach being promoted isn't deserving. If Gibbes gets selected we are probably stuck with him for the next 3-4 years unfortunately.

I hope it doesn't eventuate and they actually consider other applicants but I have the same gut feeling that the board or whoever is recruiting for the new role will be happy doing as little work as possible.

I'd rather back a young coach like Tamati Ellison than someone like Chris Gibbes who literally hasn't proved anything.

I do however question the NZ Herald article above. Last week they had only kicked off the recruiting process and mentioned there were about 10 interested parties, but now the NZH are reporting Gibbes is the clear favourite. To me it sounds like they are simply making assumptions, so I hope they are wrong.

Never mind. It could be worse.

much worse. Gibbes did ok with Wellington. He will do ok with the canes. But will never win the whole thing. He will do enough to not be fired though. He will be another Colin Cooper type coach but with slightly worse results

The biggest piece to the Canes puzzle has always been the same. Who is the 10.
Any decent coach should be able to take the resources that the Franchise collects and shape a good team but hardly any team wins a Comp without a class 10.
You have some good young candidates but any incoming coach needs to back one and build a multi year campaign around them.

Has any team ever won a comp with a class ten?

The Canes definitely have the ingredients to be a big title threat over the next World Cup cycle. We've got a maturing forward pack, we've got some classy young backs coming through, but you're right we need someone to steer the ship effectively.

Harry Godfrey looks like someone capable of doing the business for the Canes moving forward but he is still very green. The Canes probably have to pin a lot of their hopes on Brett Cameron, until at least Godfrey surpasses him and that may take a couple years.

The other option is to give Love another crack in the ten jersey, he's a more mature player now versus when he last played 10 for the Canes a couple years ago. He's been injured for a long period so it's hard to gauge where he sits but he could also be an option.

Then there's Aiden Morgan who's been underwhelming for me so far. He's not bad at taking the line on but he really doesn't have much in the way of a big boot which is pretty vital when you get down to those bigger games.

@Canes4life I was very impressed with Cameron. Just needs to stay fit. Then one of love, Godfrey or Morgan as his backup

I wonder if Milton Haig has put his application in. I think he is in Japan at the moment.

Love will probably get that fullback jersey once he returns so I'd say Godfrey or Morgan to back-up. Maybe Godfrey because he can cover 10/15.

    Blues: Schmidt, Cotter, Boyd, Pivac

Crusaders: Goodman staying at Leinster, Cotter, Brad Mooar, Glenn Delaney, Deans (though unlikely to leave Japan, and Reds are after him)

If Crusaders can't get Goodman out of his Leinster contract I believe Ross Filipo is likely the prime candidate, Mansbridge said they were targeting people who'd been in the environment before, Filipo is highly regarded coach, 46 capped Crusader, won NPC as head coach of Waikato.

Also just wanted to highlight how the Chiefs are currently 9-0 since Filipo took over Gatland's role with the forwards this year...

The forgotten man in all the talk about who coaches the Blues next is their present forwards coach.Over the past 5 years his forwards have always been at the least very competitive. He with his head coach won a title and were runners up last year.I would suggest selection errors cost them dearly in that match. He coached very successful HawkesBay and Nth Harbour sides ,and of course two titles with Dave Rennie 2012 /2013 with the Chiefs as forwards coach ,also Head Coach at International level with NZ Schoolboys and Samoa..Tom Coventry.

It's weird he hasn't been mentioned. Maybe he doesn't want to be a head coach?

Remember last year when the AB coaching change almost happened and MacDonald was going to join the AB's? The Blues were scrambling to do a reshuffle and there was no time to recruit externally.. the obvious choice for coach was Coventry but apparently it was going to be Halangahu. Maybe Coventry is happy just dealing with forwards?

I think it would be a shame for him to be completely overlooked, and to not be involved in some way.Who knows though what theBoard are looking for.Do all the present assistants have to wait their fate as well.?Very disruptive times for these assistant coaches I’m sure.

    Jason O'Halloran

I've long hoped he'd come back and coach in NZ again.

What he did for the Turbos was incredible. Suntory's current attack coach, Eddie Jones rates him highly.

    His coaching CV is impressive:

What a shambles all this has become.Three franchises trying to win matches with assistant coaches not knowing what their future is going to be.,or even have a job next season.

Same. He would be a good choice

The fact his name hasn't even come up in the media doesn't make sense

Hope so, look at the difference in the forwards since he’s taken over.
