He might have been an almost "ever present" in the winning season but looking through the team there were plenty of players that might have had slightly more input into winning the championship than he did.

It's called a team sport, yes there may have been more influential players i.e. Barrett, but Shields was a massive part of our defense and brought that steel required to get the Canes over the line.

Maybe embrace the fact we are getting an experienced player back in the environment instead of poking holes in every little detail.

We need as much experience as possible considering we are losing Coles and Ardie next year.

Honestly confused by those anti this signing. He's 31 ffs.

We have a very young group of loosies, and one absolutely plodder. Swapping the plodder for Shields is a great move (I assume that's what will happen).

Not sure how easy it is to find but would be good to know which of our loosies are off contract end of this season.

I know right, only because he's from Wellington aye. You wouldn't be getting this push back if Shields was from Hawkes Bay.

The likes of @Higgins are trolling at this point.

@Higgins not Shields fault Jules dropped a sitter and the TMO had an absolute howler with the Dixon try.

    He got it down.

Wonder who the captain will be next year. Shields might be one option. Blackwell another though I hope not . Barrett another. Kirifi another although he doesn't seem to be rated as captaincy material by the Canes coaches. Maybe co-captains. Kirifi and Barrett

I don’t think Shields will come straight back in and be captain. It’s a hard one because Saturday showed Blackwell and Kirifi not being in the park is a good thing. The Canes make less mistakes and are more disciplined when those two are not there, therefore I wouldn’t want either of them being captain.

Maybe someone like Devan Flanders could be a good option. He seems like a good young leader and captaincy could bring out the best in him.

@Canes4life What sort of form is he in? Also curious on whether he hypothetically would qualify for the All Blacks. While Heinz is unlikely to be picked he would be eligible.

@SBW1 Shields has already served his three-year stand-down period, so is eligible. Can't see him picked either. He would be way back in the queue.

@Stargazer Played for New Zealand in the 2011 Under 20s World Cup which won and in 2016 named in the wider All Blacks squad. He got close and would possibly have been picked if he had bided his time.

@SouthernMann a Hurricanes boot doesn’t constitute grass, but we could argue this forever and a day in the end it counted as a try and you guys won the title.

@Canes4life Heard he is returning to NZ at the conclusion of the French Top 14 season. Lions appear to have an impressive squad going into this year's NPC.

And a good young coach in T Ellison to boot.

@Canes4life Think he plays in Manawatu, was from Horowhenua-Kapiti region, and was in Canes age group teams. After playing for U21 Barbarians last year, he turned up in this weekend's Blues A team.

@Tim Yes, another Manawatū hooker. He was rumoured to be moving to NH last year according to the local reporter Peter Lampp, but didn't.
