Fuck Schmidt.
Fuck him very much.
I met him in my teenage years and as a result care for him very little.
Am therefore way on Team Razor.

In all seriousness though I'd be really happy if Schmidt got the role, he's my preferred candidate.

Really? I'm a bit worried that Joe is a bit fixed in his ways. Short term he could be a real tonic but longer term he'd need an inventive backs coach wouldn't he?
Carlos Spencer maybe...And that brings us to who would Joe pick at 10?

The problem with Schmit's Irish teams was that their highly attritional game plan made it hard for them to back up 2 huge games. They'd effectively blown their load against France in 2015 and the preceeding 3 years had taken their toll in 2019. They had nothing left in the tank. Not conducive at all to tournament rugby. He wouldn't have to do that with the ABs and there are certainly elements from those Irish teams that would be nice to see in the ABs. Some forward muscle for starters!
But I don't believe for a second he'll be head coach. How can you sell that to the NZ rugby public? Unless they discover a decomposed corpse in his car or he badly injures himself breakdancing, it will be Razor.
Ohh schnapp!
But the imagery is a little claustrophobic and worrying...

The way it is now (and it is very early) DMac has shown he can be the kind of steady influence that we've been missing at 10. I hope whoever is coaching come RWC23 time, DMac is in the frame

From what I have seen DMac is the frontrunner.
Razor has already picked him for his team in the past not sure what Joseph and Brown would pick but I'd imagine they'd also consider DMac.
Can't believe BB is still such a static deliverer at 10. -

Personal dislike based on actually meeting the person is already far more informed than 98% of the posts in this thread so please, tell us more!

Schmidt has a wealth of experience on the international scene, and is the main reason Ireland has gone from easy-beats to a serious rugby team in recent times. Whether Razor fans like it or not, that puts Schmidt in a really strong position to take the head coaching role. I'd be happy with either, but lean towards Schmidt given his experience up north.
-
To Razor's credit, he took a declining Crusaders team under Blackadder and restored them to their glory days. Although that was in Super rugby so a level down, we could use that at AB level right now as well...

Have mentioned it before, and itβs not that bad really.
Attended Scout Jamboree back in the early 80s.
Combined our district and the neighbouring district, so "Patrols" were mixed across the groups.
Just scraped into the eligible age group so being the youngest I was the target of much hilarity. Not massively nasty hazing, but enough to be annoying.
Whilst not one of the worst perpetrators he was patrol leader, and could have knocked it on the head (and shouldn't have joined in).
Don't hold that big a grudge (overstated for effect) but I do hold it against him.
Edit: he was about 3 or 4 years ahead of me at high school.

I've never been a fan after hearing stories about him from people in and out of their teenage years (but not his), then you add that to Tasesa Lavea over Carlos at the Blues and I'm very much team Razor too (despite the twin impediments of him being both a Cantab/Crusader and from BoP).

You could also join in on the side of Mount College (Robertson) v Tauranga Boys (Schmidt) if that makes it more palatable. We'll reverse the '89 Council amalgamations yet

Oh speaking of schools Schmidt used to coach Napier Boys too which is another huge negative against him.

I'm both impressed that you managed to resurrect the spectre of Tasesa Lavea's Blues playing career and concerned that Bay of Canterbury could become a weird hybrid alterverse.

PS Should the thread now be shelved and a new future AB coach thread rise from the ashes? Given there is no longer a Foster vs Robertson situation that is...

TBF I probably bring up the Lavea over Carlos at least 3 or 4 times a year just to keep it fresh (and it should be noted I have nothing against Tasesa).
The Bay of Canterbury alterverse just sent a shiver down my spine.

@Nepia Best you jump into the Jamie Joseph camp, then - a good Ta$man man.
Leon can stay at the Blues, Dermody at the Highlanders, Andrew Goodman can come back to replace Razor. We just need another ex-Mako coach to take over the Canes, hmmm who can I think of....

I'll cut you for that photo bitch, if I ever have this misfortune to be forced to visit the Ta$man region. But, TBH I don't care what the Canes do, if that crap franchise wants to rehire him for more years of mediocrity it doesn't worry me, just means more Magpies playing for franchises actually like.
I've heard something about Joseph that firmly puts him in the Schmidt camp for me.

i really feel Hammett has unfinished business at the Crusaders, he has such a history with them surely Head Coach is the logical next step.....
