And yeah @Nepia i have resigned myself to never having christmas in NZ again, the cost is ridiculous when compared to going anywhere else, completely unjustifiable.
but hey, Qantas shareholders are happy aye? And that little midget Irish fuck got his juicy bonus. So i guess absolutely fuck everyone else.
I don't fly Qantas unless it's work enforced, they once unloaded my baggage in a two hour layover in Townsville, I was sitting having a coffee near the carousel and noticed there was one bag just looping around for about half an hour - it was mine. I went and grabbed it, took it to the counter, and the Qantas dude told me I should have left it there and that I couldn't take it on the plane. After some backwards and forwards and the arrival of the manager they eventually let me take it on. If I hadn't been sitting next to the carousel those pricks would have left it there.
I did fly business to NZ once (with vouchers from cancelled work flights) and it was great.

It's 10 hours mate, long way. Could probably handle the drive there, but would have drive to back overnight Sat night to make it work for a family lunch Sunday

throw in if it's an athletics comp she'll need a day between that drive and to start running, suddenly a couple of hours travel is two days. and another home.

Combination of covid, capacity issues and gouging.
Rental car fleets were cut right back, you're coming at peak season for northern hemisphere tourists and insurance companies have snapped up most of the cars as insurance covers for flood damaged vehicles. The NZ rental fleet was at about 65% of pre-covid levels before the recent weather events.
It's very hard to get a car at all and impossible to get one where you drop it off in a regional centre.
accomodation depends on where you are looking at. Occupancy rates are high because of pent up tourist demand plus a lot being used for emergency housing - even before the floods plus a high degree of trying to recoup their Covid losses.
I was on holiday last week and a room that would have cost $150 in 2020 was $400.
Apartment in the Parker Building in Napier (if you know it) was $750 / night. Good old Air BnB not offering a full refund cox cancelled less than 24 hours out! That is definitely deserving of GOM rant right there
