Gentle ribbing then nothing but admiration for the English rugby team when they deliver.

But when you're constantly bombarded with 'England football are awesome' by the media and England football fans, when they fail spectacularly it's hilarious.

To those comparing this loss to SA v Japan etc, it was in no way much worse betting wise, Iceland were 10/1 so a 10% chance of winning, so this "upset" was more likely to happen.

Japan I think were 30/1, so more of a surprise.

Reputation-wise, it may have been much worse, as the population comparisons etc are embarrassing, and England football fans have a deluded sense of their team's ability and are shocked when the perform poorly, tournament after tournament.
Do shit in tournament. National uproar, manager sacked. We realise we're shit.
New manager and young team assembled. Optimism.
We do well in the qualifiers. New hope. Media lauds new look England
Next tournament arrives, this time we're gonna win it! it's a golden generation of new players
Do shit in tournament. National uproar, rinse and repeat.

I read an interesting fact about the success of England and Germany since the 1966 WC final.

England have won only 6 knockout games at major tournament since that time. Germany have won 6 tournaments.

Mate I get sick of the media beat up on the England football team too. They've played like shit for years. Staid, defeatist footy, followed by managers and officials that aren't even one-eyed, just Nelsonian blind that spout meaningless drivel. I haven't been able to stomach watching footy for Gond knows how long. The last two World Cups I didn't bother with, let alone the Euros or friendlies.

Bloody sad really. :mad1:

To be fair England are/were ranked 11th in the current Fifa rankings, above Italy and France.

The FIFA rankings are a crock of shit. Rugby rankings are way more accurate. I can't remember which world cup it was where USA were ranked number 1 I think heading into the tournament.

Isn't there a degree of subjectivity in the FIFA rankings as opposed to WR where the points system is pretty rigid?

via Football365 i read a scathing article on the English football system by Stephan Henchoz. It's a really good, but far from complimentary article.

On the "how big is this shock" o-meter, Iceland beating the recent semi-finalists in the World Cup home and away was way bigger than them beating the perpetual tournament also-rans.
