@Chris Not all those players are confirmed, yet, for 2023 (or their contract duration was never published, so we simply don't know). You forgot one who has re-signed: Devan Flanders.
Well yes there is another one.
Looks crammed to me at the Canes because that’s 8 LFs 9 if you add Lakai and most would be still signed something is going to give there at least 2 of them. -

@Winger He may get a development contract (or already have one).
Real chance he has been offered a full one somewhere else.

He will likely want more though. He good enough already to warrant a full contract
-
@Bovidae Yep, IIRC, they did something similar when Flanders arrived on the scene. Something like a three-year contract, of which the first year was a development contract and the next two years a full contract. The Highlanders have also signed players on contracts that start in 2024.

I don't want to become a stuck record on this. But Lakai is another the Canes must sign
With the big improvement in form by Numia and Lomax the Canes could have some very good front row options. Bird has also surprised me this year so we could have some good lock options. We do need one more quality lock though.
Lakai looks a future super star to me. He would add another high work rate option along with Savea. Maybe at 7
In the backs Morgan has improved out of sight this NPC so we might have a quality 1st. But he needs to keep this up. So I'm feeling a bit more optimistic about our chances now. As long as they sign Lakai and resign Barrett
Do you have room for Lakai in your LF mix with ?
Blake Gibson, Te Kamaka (TK) Howden, Brayden Iose, Du'Plessis Kirifi, Tyler Laubscher, Reed Prinsep,Ardie Savea, and Caleb Delany
all still signed I believe a real danger another team may pick him up.Prinsep gone. And don't mind if Gibson goes as well

Still there for 2023 I think.

I think so far you guys have let the right players go for next season, except for losing Goosen.

@Canes4life Makes sense. A team that struggles with set piece hires an ex player who struggled with set piece to be their coach.

It seems a strange addition but guess give it time. Who did he replace?

he's come on a long way and seems to be taking coaching very seriously, firstly with otago over southland and now the canes
Otago scrum has looked very good so will be interested in how he goes
those that cant...teach

Yep, and to go back a bit Laurie Mains was a damn good forward coach for a fullback.

Must have come into some money after they did not have enough in the kitty to keep Carlos Spencer on but miraculously had enough to hire Tyler Blyendahl a month or so later and now this.
-
Yea playing ability isn't an indicator at all of coaching ability.
Look at Jason Ryan - Heartland level player but proven at NPC & Super level, and now at International level.
God if we kept Princep but didn't snap up Lakai. How disastrous would that be.
Thoughts on best back row?
Flanders
A Savea
LakaiIt's a strong group we'd have, sans Princep.
What Holland will probably pick:
Princep
Kirifi
Ardie -

He was also player/coach in the US for a season which is where he got the coaching bug. Came back and did a degree in Sports Science majoring in coaching and management.
At least he's taking it seriously.
Last I saw him, he was flogging French made gin at a rugby tournament in Wimbledon.
