@taniwharugby it really is baffling for a team to be struggling so much and not even try something different like sotutu...and not even crazy different like....just trying someone you picked for your squad in his primary position...or Fainga'anuku
If the team is struggling because it keeps reverting to a helter skelter style why on earth would you want more helter skelter players?
Aren’t you the guy wanting the epitome of helter skelter - DMac - back in the squad?

We haven't had the chance to try new stuff/players as we are always chasing a series we need to win - which means picking the more established, experienced players. Bit of a vicious circle.
Might be time to throw caution to the wind and do stuff like stick JB at 12, RTS at 13. Ardie at 7, Hoskins at 8 and give Fainga'anuku a fair bit of time in the midfield off the bench. It would at least test some of the Fern's selection theories....

Do we just have players who don’t care about losing? Is there a solution to that?
They don't want to lose but they seem to have lost the way to win.

TBF, DMac was shaping up well with way less helter-skelter pre-injury and was pretty good in '18 - particularly on the EOYT.
Don't know if he'd fit into the current squad right now though.

RTS at 13
That sounds far too stupid even for the fern...
It would be in the true spirit of the place but I read yesterday that his best position was 13 and Panadol only uses him at 2nd 5/8 as Reiko is at 13.

@nostrildamus Only in some people's heads.
In my head, but can you honestly say Bridgey was that much better than Nareki? nonetheless that's now long in the past, although if Otago make it to the quarters and Nareki makes a good go of it I would like to see him in the all blacks xv back three with Sullivan and Telea.

@gt12 yep, I've been banging the off field stuff and suggesting they look to MCcaw, DC, top leaguies etc...seems way too insular, sure we have Schmidt and Ryan now, but Fozzie is still the boss.
Sure he might be open to new ideas, but I am sure he has ways he does stuff and won't want to shift completely.
As to defence, yep, been a huge issue in that we are leaking too many points and it is so passive that we are not putting any pressure on the opposition through strong disiplined defence.
-
@Victor-Meldrew And the fear of losing is affecting their ability to make changes. Interesting that O’Connor had a bad game for the Aussies and Rennie had no problems axing him. Fosters butt puckers up when he is faced with tough decisions.

Just basing it on what I've seen this year. Still looks a good fullback, at ten he was passing to the ground behind his backline and running away from support. Nobody knew what he was doing.
Scored an awesome try out of nothing though.

I think there's two different things. The first is the on-field stuff and inability to adapt which is down to the players, which I was mainly referring to. The other is around selection being on the safe side and that's forced on Foster and the selectors because of the continuing losses and is limiting their options.

I take back what I said about him not fitting into the current squad then....

@gt12 Yup. Noticed the shift in tone this week from the lads. When they mention preparation what they mean is your opponents strategies and how to counter them. Ireland’s midfield diamond, sexton round the back: No answer. Boks aerial attack: took a week. Pumas spread defence: barely any kicks into space. We all knew what was coming but they couldn’t prepare for it.

Did we know though? Apart from the Boks aerial attack that is.I don't watch enough international rugby not involving the ABs to know if Ireland and the Argies tried new tactics.

Nope same old same old, Ireland in 6N, Boks vs Wales (when they won) and Puma beating Scotland

Bridge wasn't fully recovered from injury when selected for the ABs again and I take back nearly 5% of everything I ever said against him.
But it does raise the question as to what sort of coaching mastermind would select an injured winger who was never a standout in the first place. -
What an arrogant little turd. Don't want to play. Don't want to win. Well all these teams not playing proper rugby are kicking the shit out of the ABs!
ABs never used to win off purely attacking rugby, it was our defence that caused turn overs, and counter attacks that were key. Even one of the tries we scored last weekend was that a turn over try, from line out rather then defence. We used to kick more and have less possession than the other team. Kick to them and use defence to force mistakes. But now we
- keep possession but don't do anything clever with it, like say Ireland who use deception to create holes. We just fling it about, in easily read pod systems
- We kick less, and kick worse when we do
- Defend so passively we don't force turnovers anyway
So get fucked, Smith, and take your rose tinted arrogant glasses off. If you actually ran some times, then maybe our attack would be better - remember the triple threat, you turd?

What a weird post. He agrees with you. Blinded by the headline?
In a nutshell 'we need to curb our instinct to keep playing ball in hand because other teams are happy to play a style where they focus on giving us the ball then pressuring us. We need to put that pressure back on them'
He's talking sense not having a 'wah' -
@Crucial could be a bit. I just rage at they're not playing rugby, not playing to win. Fucking stupid shit. Of course they are, and they are winning. Also more talk of controlling the game etc, but same shit we've heard for years, but no actual change in execution
