So I guess the Ireland debacle was all Taylor and Reece's fault aye?
I mean Taylor played his part stinking up the joint but very harsh on Reece, I'd like to see him on the bench as he could make a real impact late in the game
The reserve backline mix is all wrong. Either Rieko or one of the Barretts would need to move to the wing if Clarke or Jordan went off injured. And then Havili to centre - that worked out well in the 3rd test.
One step forward with ST starting but then one step backwards with other selections.
I think it’s simple 10 or 15 get injured/replaced Mo’unga comes on.
If 11-14, QT comes on. QT plays centre if Ioane needs replacing. If a winger, then Ioane to wing and QT to centre.
the main fucking problem is if it's not for injury then you get some muddled shit like Ireland 3 where Mounga comes on, but we leave Barretts and Havili on and the entire backline looks like it was drawn out of a hat.
Having Barrett and Mounga in teh same 23 is pure injury cover these days. They are the exact same fucking player. And Apparently you can't sub a Barrett, so they both end up ont eh field together getting in everyone's way.
It's just muddled thinking, and more evidence of "pick your best 23 players, not your best team" which is very apparent and very detrimental
-
@mariner4life its fucking infuriating isn't it!
-
despite the team being entirely predictable (Clarke the only selection in the 23 that actually raised an eyebrow) i am actually less confident than i was when it was named.
Same players. Same coaches. All ruthlessly exploited by the Irish not 2 fucking weeks ago.
The boks will be even better at set piece. Even better at the breakdown. and kick better. All areas we were very much 2nd in during that Irish series. The only thing that gives confidence is i don't see the Boks having that varied attack that had us chasing shadows for two tests. My guess is our pattern covers them better than what the Irish threw at us (that's a guess).
I hpe to fuck Jordan or Reiko have blinders on the counter, or Savea magics up some points to make up for the errors. Or we are boned.
-
@mariner4life for all the talk of Ryan having limited time with the pack, I think in a way, that isnt a bad thing, especially if he just takes it back to the basics, play simple rugby.
Use AI, ST, SB, GB, AT, to truck it, clean efficiently, draw thier numbers in, when we move it wider with support and hit the ball with pace, make sure we have bodies in motion, and on the other side of the ball, make your fucking tackles.
Easy as!
Our mid-field still concerns me though, DH & RI, just dont seem a great pairing, given neither are natural mid-fielders and still learning there, plus there are questions over DH being at 12 in the first place, but thats a conversation not unlike Ardie isnt an 8...

Both surprised and disappointed to see Reece out of the lineup and Clarke in. But I thought he might be 23.
I remain sceptical about our choices at 12 and 6. Let's hope that both step up for 80 minutes and spark us to a victory.Reece is unlucky. I think he's certainly the better player overall and in a functioning team he starts. But because they're not functioning, at all, they've gone for the hail mary move which is to select Clarke and hope he has a game like he had at Eden Park two years ago.
Despite Sevu having the greater net value, I do think Clarke might get them over the gainline more often though, which shows how desperate they are for go forward.
-
@Frye in my ideal world Jordan is at 15 and Reece is at 14, both with a license to roam and pick out lazy defenders on the fringes.
Of course instead only one will be picked, and our wingers will be glued to the touchline to "spread the field" like it's two thousand and fucking 15
-
@mariner4life im starting to feel uncomfortable with how much i am agreeing with you

I think Clarke is who they always intended to pick. This is the first Test this year he's been fit to play
One wing being a power winger, one wing being a second fullback is a good balance. Clarke is much much faster than the other power option (LF) and he has some special aerial skills. I expect to see him used during kickoffs

If that is how we win, I will be pissed. A win by individual genius might save Foster's arse with no actually coaching improvements. I hope we win, and it is a concerted team effort, with excellent shape and tactics - which could possibly point to an improvement that will work if continued to RWC. If not, I hope we get smashed, pull the plaster, lance the boil, get the pain over quickly rather than more individual pieces of magic papering over huge Foster sized cracks.

Because our other areas aren't settled (midfield) a wing reserve would be a luxury. We are in a bit of a tangle personnel wise in the backs, a bit like the forwards. Trying to find spots for the 'better players' such as Ioane and Jordan, a bit like fitting Savea into the forwards.
At some point (probably not with these coaches/selectors) we need to put the best person in place for each position rather than squeezing them in.
We cant play Clarke and Reece without dropping Jordan or Jordie to the bench. Likewise when ALB is back then keeping Rieko on the field means someone else getting dropped. -
@Machpants yeah...in love for us to pin them in their own 22 for long periods and score after sustained dominance.....and to win lotto

Wish they would play Jordan at 15. The problem is BB is a crap goal kicker so his brother has to play.
BB is on borrowed time if he keeps trotting out nothing but aimless midfield bombs.
At least they improved the front row.
I think against the Boks, Jordie is your man at fullback. We’ll need his long kicking game and he’s our best back under the high ball. I’d be trying Jordan at fullback versus the Argies.
Jordie biggest issue is can he get through 80 minutes with a low error rate and without a major brain explosion
He did versus SA1 last year, when everyone else shat the bed under the high ball. Sure 4 years ago, I was there, but bollox recently. Want great last few games, but not many were
Yeah, he ended up having to cover the entire back 3 that game, sprinting around catching all of the high balls because everyone else was dropping them. Hard for players that get thrown in the deep end early in their career to get rid of their "error prone" reputation after an understandably shaky start.

Speaking of SA1 last year - someone else who did great in that game was Sotutu off of the bench.
Since that game he's played against USA and Italy...... that's it.

Sotutu is a bit of an enigma at times and I wonder if he's got a knack of not doing well at the wrong times. Like making mistakes in training just as selectors are chatting on the sideline about possibly adding him in.
When he had games in NPC last year you wouldn't have thought he was a rated Super player let alone an AB at times. Was very hot and cold. Then he looks like a diamond in some Super games. Perhaps there are concerns about his consistency which seems a bit at odds to the licence for inconsistency given to some established players (like a certain hooker from the south) -

This wouldn't be so much of an issue if he was kicking 100% of his kicks for goal, was using his boot to greater effect to win the territorial battle. He doesn't have to be overly creative, but he needs to inject himself into the attack more effectively. Be defensively sound. Like Mils used to do.
Like he did after playing a lot of rugby at fullback. Unfortunately, he's played most of this year at 12 hasn't he?
Yep. That foray into the midfield has had a negative showing on his play at XV. I'd be happy at the moment to bench him if we had a decent goalkicker elsewhere.

More sense would be for him to be inplace of Havili, he's a better bet. I have no faith at all in Havili, ultimate flat track bully in the midfield. At least Jordie hit the line with some venom verus the Irish

He started the year at FB. Took some time before being moved to 2nd5. And even after moving still played at times at FB
