Springboks v All Blacks I

You cant change a lot in two weeks, but I just hope posting loose forwards on the sidelines is one of the first quick changes. Those post match analysis videos were absolutely damning ...
-
@Chris-B i suspect you are completely right. Which is fucked really, because that's the same team that just got rolled
i would make a few changes (these are mine, this is not what i expect to be rolled out)
Bower, Sami T, Ta'avao, Barrett, Whitelock, Ioane, Cane, Sotutu, Smith, Mo'unga, Clarke, Tupaea, Ioane, Jordan, Barrett
de Groot, Taylor, Newell, Vaai, Savea, Cristy, Barrett, Reece.Biggest calls are Clarke, who despite not playing for a while, brings two things. He's good under the high ball. Is bigger than the SA wings. And, if we keep hoping someone breaks a game open, he's more likely to do that one-on-on. Harsh on Reece who has been bloody good, but i bring him on for the last quarter with a bit of a license.
I am not sold on Mo'unga, but Barrett was dogshit against Ireland, and standards need to be set. Also if we insist on kicking everything, i feel like he's the best at it.
Savea to the bench would be howled by every rugby pundit in the world. But it makes so much sense for so many reasons., and actually plays to Savea's strengths, and avoids his weaknesses.I am well aware that none of this is happening
-
@Bovidae They might do that, but I think the fatigue factor for Barrett mitigates against it. If they keep him on, why not keep him on at lock?
I think they'll be planning to sub Akira and it makes most sense to have a direct replacement on the bench.
I wondered about Ross - didn't think he stood out vs Ireland - but, that's a coin toss with Plumtree's picks, but Ryan as forwards coach.
-
@mariner4life I'd make some of your changes as well.
If we lose this game I think we'll get some next week.

I agree with all of that, except for me personally I'd have RTS starting at 12 partnering Rieko. He has the highest ceiling, has big game temperament, and already has a partnership with Rieko. IMO the more gametime he gets the better he'll be.
I'm also very much on the fence re: the 10s. Barrett was poor in tests 2 & 3, but so was our overall gameplan. Happy with either at this stage so long as the tactics improve.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we started with:
Bower, Sami T, Ta’avao, Va’ai, Whitelock, S. Barrett, Cane, Savea
De Groot, Taylor, Newell, A. Ioane, Papalii

You can't pick the better 10 unless you know your gameplan, particularly in defence.
To do that, you actually need a clear gameplan. FWIW (and I think Mo'unga has been teh standout 10 at Super for a long time), with less time and space and increased emphasis on defence, I'd pick Barrett. But with a different game plan it could be Mo'unga.
Foster and the assistants have three weeks to figure this out. They better show up with some form of clear improvement

yes, i can see that. But it would require a huge change in shape and pattern and positioning or we are going to get thumped at the breakdown.

Interesting to see Cane once again trot the complete bullshit about the team not being far off, not many areas need to improve etc. He's kept saying that, and it's obviously been very wrong. It's a fucked up attitude, and as a guy who is below test level in current ability and form, he better bring something better than that bullshit as captain.
Should have been dumped last year.

Always one step behind the Fern.As long as we don't upset the applecart by actually winning.

Paul Cully lists some of the selection decisions for this test. One is starting Taukei’aho. I bet it won't happen despite being the best use of the hookers in the squad (ability and form).
Agre But hope Taukei’aho does start and Taylor is dropped out of the 23. But is Ryan likely to drop Taylor? And if he's in the 23 he will likley start

A delusional cane, channeling his inner Cheika
“It may seem like there’s a lot to fix from the outside but in camp we have some clear focuses and often when you get those big things right a lot of the smaller things that may seem like issues sort themselves out,” Cane told reporters on Tuesday.
“It’s important that we don’t focus on all these things going wrong because the truth is there aren’t a whole lot. With top teams, it is small margins in games.
“In the last Test (against Ireland) we lost by 10 points (32-22) but we let them score two rolling maul tries, which for an All Black pack is something we don’t see as acceptable. Fix that and it is one big thing we have sorted out.””

But what can he say. He's got to beleive in the team

@Winger Is Coles able to contribute anything now? He's extremely old, and there have been no signs of being anything close to test level this year.
Depends how is fitness is. Maybe he's past it but then why is he in the team. Hes one injury away from making the 23
-
@Winger A little bit of honesty!
"We were way off the level required against a top international team like Ireland. We have to be much better in every aspect, but especially defence. It's up to all of us in the squad and management team to get us playing at All Blacks level."
That sends a much better message than once again recycling "we're not far off" after copping yet another hiding. Being nice and liked doesn't mean anything if it's the only thing you can be.

A backline of
Smith, Mo’unga, Fainga’anuku, Havili, Goodhue, Reece, Jordan
Bench: Christie, B. Barrett, R. Ioane
And if it goes pear shape, the Fern will have plenty of fun. I will go into hiding…

poor from you
what happened to the halfback being "A Highlander"
Standards are slipping everywhere

@Winger that one will be interesting, but given Fozzie was selecting Taylor previously, you could argue if he starts again, that it isnt all Ryan, but then you would hope that maybe Ryan will know what buttons to push to get him firing again.
That said, ST needs to start against a top opposition to see if he can claim that role.
