@Bones linking once he has ball in hand? as in looking for support? i can see that, conversely he is amazing at timing a run to receive the ball from someone else, you never see him having to slow a run or have a ball drop in front of him, always right there are the right time....and then runs away from everyone 😉

@ACT-Crusader said in Will Jordan's try scoring:

@Chris-B Joe Rok and Rupeni are two of the best wingers I’ve seen play because when they ran with ball in hand you just thought they would get there and score. And if they didn’t make it, something would be set up for a team mate more often than not.

    Jordan is the same.

I reckon my footy career would have been quite a bit more fun if I'd had the speed, size and skills of any of those three! 🙂

Yeah that, on your converse I point you to last year, when to me he seemed to put a lot of ball down - no idea where the blame lies for that though, as potentially it's just teammates not being used to him. It was evident (to me) in the crusaders and ABs last year, but he improved hugely this year for the saders, so I was hoping to see a massive jump this year for the ABs - covid and coaching getting in the way though.

@MN5 Jane definitely stood out to me too

Apparently @Bones marked him in a club game once.

Shocked even at club level they let players carry crayons onto the field.

I'm in the minority, but I think Jordan's linking work is still pretty shoddy. But having lost all faith in the coaching, I wouldn't be surprised to see a turn around in this aspect under a different regime.

You are not wrong but it is a team malaise.

No crayons to carry if I've eaten them all.

not meaning to hijack the thread too much but was also surprised how MANY Ben Smith had, considering the large gap he had after his first test, 84...bloody legend

One of the greatest ever ABs.
Our best ever fullback along with Cullen
    Complete player.

I reckon Ben Smith should've been the World Rugby Player of the year at some point.

For a while, he played whole seasons barely making an error.

He was too consistent to stand out, sadly. For them that is. One of my fave ABs, nearly invariably made ground.

    George Bridge 12
-12 tries? Where are the highlights? I assume the video will be longer to account for the change in speed from Jordan?
PS great to see that https://www.allblacks.com/playerprofiles/george-bridge/ employs mums to write bios:

    15 test

Sitiveni Sivivatu had 18 tries in his first 15 tests (three of those matches and four of those tries were for the Pacific Islanders).

In his first 15 tests for the ABs, he managed 16 tries.

He scored 26 tries in his first 26 tests but they started to dry up pretty quickly after that (six tries in his remaining 22 tests).

@FakatavaAllBlack He somehow managed to fool the majority of the NZ public and most on here at the time that he was a world class player after that game too. Anyone who thought about criticizing him back then got laughed at lol.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby-world-cup-2023/300994147/rugby-world-cup-recordsetting-will-jordan-soars-and-scores-for-resurgent-all-blacks

A nice Stuff article by Marc Hinton on Will reminded me of this thread. Marc missed a trick by not noting that Will went past his childhood hero Danny Boy in test tries on Saturday morning.

Coincidentally, compared with the OP, Will has played another 15 tests (since then) and scored another 12 tries. He hasn't had a five try romp against Tonga in those tests, so I'd guess statistics theory would be inconclusive that he's slowed down - small samples etc.

He's now up to 31 test tries from 30 tests - alongside Ma'a Nonu who got 31 from 103 tests.

Once you're over 30 test tries, I think you're into the elite list of AB try-scorers (that no forwards have got to).

Will's now 13th equal on the all-time test try scoring record. Of those ahead of him only Big Jules (54 tests) and Cully (58 tests) have played less than twice the number Will has. I'm pretty sure he's about four tests faster than Joe Rok in getting to this mark and pretty sure Joe was the next fastest (though I haven't checked).

Lots of ifs and buts in terms of positional changes (I'm expecting he'll play fullback next year), injuries and whether he hangs around, but you'd be pretty brave to bet against him toppling Doug's record.

If he ends up playing as long as e.g. Ben Smith or Beauden, he might well end up with a sort of Bradmanesque All black try-scoring mark - and get up around the world leaders - Ohata (69), Habana (67) and Campo (64).

    @Chris-B

It'll be interesting to see if he keeps it up. So many others on the list hit a wall at ~26 years of age. Which is very young.. there's no reason it should've happened

    He's currently 25

@Duluth Yeah - especially if he shifts to fullback - which he probably needs to do to prolong his career.

Papali'i's comment about the amount of laptop work he does is pretty interesting.
