Read somewhere that he is back in France now. The article said his family found it hard to settle in Paris so eh returned in the off season. Also his form wasn't great
Would be good but surprised if he returns. 29 now and the money overseas would be much better

I don't think Morgan or Love are ready yet. So hope he steps up. And has a VG clearing punt

@Winger Definitely an upgrade from JGB. Cameron can run, too!
Agree about Morgan and Love, although I think Morgan has already shown more potential at 10 than Love.
I feel like Morgan will be better than Cameron long term but at the raw age of 20 he's not ready to take on the role week in, week out. I think Cameron will start in the big games for us in 2023/2024, whereas Morgan (who is already better than someone like JGB) will get occasional start to ensure he progresses his development.
I think you'll find that Love will probably move away from that position and focus purely on 15, where I think he's more effective with his speed. (as seen against Ireland).
-
@Canes4life Yep, 15 seems to suit Love more. That's why I have my doubts about Godfrey signing with the Canes. He'd never get game time. Not at his preferred 10 position, and not at 15. Unless, as I supsect, he's better than some of the already contracted players. Which wouldn't surprise me at all.
-
@Stargazer yeah, we have quite a few good young 10/15s coming through. If you add in Moorby playing fullback and Jordie switching between 12/15 it’s certainly not a problem area going forward.
Can Godfrey play 14 maybe?
-
@Canes4life He's a great prospect at 10; also a great prospect at 15. Why on earth would you move him to another spot, just to fit him in? He may just be better off somewhere else.
-
@Stargazer because he has the skillset. I.e Cory Jane was a fullback but 14 ended up being his best position. If he can ply multiple positions then he’s definitely a player the Canes won’t want to let slip through their grasp.
At the end of the day 15 isn't too dissimilar to the right wing in the modern game.
-
@Canes4life He has - for someone so young - already great game management skills. Those skills would be wasted on the wing. I've nothing against moving Love to the wing though.
-
@Canes4life any first five being played on the wing would remind me of Todd Blackadder playing Colin Slade on the wing at the crusaders🙂😂
-
@FakatavaAllBlack Godfrey is more of a fullback than a first five isn’t he? If he’s trying to crack the Canes as a first five I think he’s better to look elsewhere. Where that is I’m not sure because he’ll be behind talented players wherever he goes.
-
@Canes4life Godfrey was a 1st 5 at Whanganui Collegiate in combination with Adam Lennox (halfback).
With Love and Morgan, in the NZ age-group teams they've played in together, Morgan has always been the 1st 5. Love has more utility value so could play in other positions. In the NZ Schools game against Aust, he started on the wing and ended up at 2nd 5.

I haven't seen him play but I hope he's good. Hes been pumped up playing for Manawatu
But comparing him to JGB. He lost form after he returned from injury and was close to useless. He was never great but did have some good games before he was out for a year or so.
What about Jordie Barrett. We need to keep him but so far I haven't read anything about his plans. He's easily our best back now. While some are rated I think all the rest have limitations.
Im unsure if the Canes try to attract top players and can't or just can't identify potential AB talent now. Chiefs are still doing well but Hurricanes like the Highlanders are missing out

@Winger think the canes will keep Jordie, his best friend just signed on yesterday!
Hope so. As the Canes don't look even close to having a winning team so he may conside rhis options. Chiefs would welcome him with open arms. Crusaders and Blues already have good options at FB and 2nd 5.

I don’t agree with you here, we brought in Moorby and Sullivan last year and they were awesome. I think Moorby scored the most tries by a Hurricane player in a rookie season and has the potential to kick on to be a very good player.
Jordie Barrett is our best back yes, but I disagree that the other backs in the side have their limits.
The likes of Love (21), Moorby (24), Roigard (21), Sullivan (23), Rayasi (25), Umaga Jensen (24) and now Cameron (25) are all still very young and who knows how far they will go. To say they have their limitations is a bit early don’t you think?
Then you have an even younger crop of talent coming through in the likes of Higgins (19) and Godfrey (20) who have the makings of being very capable football players.
TJ Perenara and Julian Savea are probably seeing out their last years at the Hurricanes so it would be good to replace those guys with more experience so we don’t have a squad full of young players (with potential) and instead have a sprinkling of proven talent aswell.
Anyway I’m sure there’s room for a few more signings yet.
-
@Canes4life I agree that the Hurricanes brought in some really good talent, who could lift the Hurricanes in the future from where they are now, although that also depends on the coaching and the opportunities they get. Think of a player like PUJ, who doesn't get those opportunities and can, therefore, maybe not develop his potential. That's probably the Canes' biggest problem.
I'm not convinced yet that Cameron's potential is that high, esp as he failed to convince at the Crusaders and was overtaken by a younger player, but who knows? It may still come. I haven't been overwhelmed by Roigard yet, either, and even Rayasi has some issues. So I kind of get where @Winger is coming from with his comment.
By the way, Godfrey is younger than Higgins. Higgins turns 20 this year; Godfrey next year (again eligible for NZU20).
I sure hope Jordie stays. It may be a good thing for the Canes that Perofeta has stepped up, that Zarn Sullivan is showing much promise & that they have RTS at 12. The Blues may be less inclined to go after Jordie again. IF Jordie would join his brother at the Blues, the Canes should go after Zarn, to reunite him with his brother.
-
@Stargazer Jordie will stay, Brett Cameron’s one of his best mates so doubt he will shift.

Cameron looks good with a second five he can hand off too as well, so you’d have to wonder if the Canes will consider a Cameron, Barrett, PUJ 10-12-13 axis. They can then use Moorby/Love at 15.
Edit: Laumape could be dark horse for a return as well on that basis

It's sounding unlikely Laumape will return but if he does it's only a bonus.
A starting backline of 9. Perenara 10. Cameron 11. Sullivan 12. Barrett 13. PUJ 14. Moorby 15. Love has a nice balance to it.
Reserve backs: 21. Roigard 22. Morgan 23. Rayasi
I feel if Jordie Barrett plays 12 you need Love at 15, his kicking game is superior to Moorby who can quite easily shift to the wing. I've got Sullivan on the left wing because he's too good to leave out of the starting side and would be a better option than Rayasi IMO.
