@Duluth Really refreshing listening to that Ryan interview.

    He speaks really well.

Normally I would agree with you, but the way NZ teams have been exiting lately it's easier said than done. It's another area where we seem to be struggling - at Super and test level.

kick off to our 22, wait for the ineffective box kick at half way. attack again

Or kick it slightly deeper and we hit it up one off from the ruck a couple of times before passing it to one of our pop gun punters who will put it out just past the 22, or not find touch at all.

He handled that very well. A simple response that would’ve taken the journo by surprise.

I would rather Newell a bit later when he has earnt his selection (and that not knocking him), by that I mean when he has gone good enough to get selected ahead of other players on form and not injury!

Bound to happen when you lose two tightheads that have both played 40+ tests each and have been the mainstays for the last few years.

@Billy-Tell I agree, Ofa hasn't cemented his position on return IMO.

Ofa has hardly set the world on fire recently (to put it mildly).
Great to see Fletcher Newell in.

The All Blacks YouTube channel has disabled comments on the Ian Foster video that was put up today but allowed them for the other two interviews with Jason Ryan and Mounga. They were up before and universally negative (can't have that). More protection of Foster.

As soon as we tried to take the points early in the third, I thought it was obvious we were going down.

I disagree. Test rugby is about scoring from opportunities. Modern defences mean it's hard to score tries (except sometimes against us :P), so I am a fan of taking the likely 3, rather than a possible 5/7.

Take the three, get the ball back and go down again and do it again. If we got to 20 points, we very very used to lose; just get points any way you can

Right now we could take the 3, but we won't be getting the ball back and we won't be doing it again. There's no way we are getting to 20 points on penalties when we can't play territory and possession, and kick the ball away every time we have it.
If we start playing properly, then sure, take the 3.

    Ofa has a neck injury.

Laulala isn't travelling with the team to SA (no mention of injury? Family reasons?)

Will Ta'avao's suspension be over by the first test? Kind of in hot water if it's not and we have Lomax starting and Newell on the bench.

I made the suggestion we should have picked Franks for the Ireland series and it's hard to argue otherwise honestly considering the pitiful performances that were on display by the 3s.

@Frye Laulala also has problems with his neck. IIRC that has been an ongoing problem for a while.

Edit: that's why Lomax was added to the squad (end of June).

    Probably Jager.

Interesting that Ryan started Jager in play-off matches ahead of Newell, but pretty much his first call as an AB coach is to pick the younger guy with the high ceiling.

I'm hoping (and somewhat expecting) this is going to be Newell's Owen Franks moment. Fletch is already 6 months older than Owen was when he made his test debut - and actually, I'm pretty sure Redbeard announced this as a Fern scoop - that Owen was in - might have got the word from Keith Robinson.

All Blacks star suspended for three weeks

According to this Angus should be well available to start vs the Boks (I imagine he did the course) and I guess the question will be whether Lomax or Newell comes off the bench. Angus seems to be a significantly more reliable scrummager these days, so I'm interested to see how he goes in a big test.

I haven't ever seen an explanation for Lomax's performance against the Tahs - so I'm a bit apprehensive about him. He's remained in the promising camp, but needs to deliver or he'll miss the bus.

Interesting times when losing two veteran tightheads doesn't have me worried - they should be worried!

sounds like he might actually get the brief, play off match...play "the best" or "most experience"....squad player that shound't have to play much and if he does it should be off the bench...blood the young guy with a big future

@Kiwiwomble Yeah - I've never been hugely excited about Jager. He's taken a long time to get to good Super rugby standard.

Fletch is exciting - though still very raw, especially in general play - and I'd have expected him to surpass Oli during next year's Super season in any case.
