It there is a cycle track round the outside of the playing field there will be some spectacular crashes on the rather tight corners not to mention not much room to pass another rider on the narrow track. Now I come to think of it full contact bike racing might prove to be a real drawcard and get the crowds streaming in through the turnstyles..

10-12 years ago you could get a 30,000 seat covered rectangular stadium for $225M.
Now it's $683M for a ... 30,000 seat covered stadium? That's not just inflation.

and as for the bonds, it's only $1,000 per person, assuming everyone participates from Canterbury region. mind you, that stretches from near Ward to the Waitaki.
Stadium economics don't stack up. Just a reminder, if you want to return 6% on the spend (to allow for upkeep, capital costs, etc), you need to generate $40M profit a year. Which is selling out a 30,000 seat stadium 27 times a year for a $50 profit over operating costs. And that's just to return 6%.

The locals are used to the conditions in winter. Plus the elements are part of the home ground advantage for when a team like the Reds visit

@nzzp in fairness, i think FoBar cost more than the official sums, there was lots of talk about deferred payments and the like...and then the public forgot about it
i mean, there is normal inflation....then there is the price of building materials in chch due to the earthquake rebuild and then COVID...and just look at that design, it is much more substantial than FoBar, depending on if you consider the zoo permanent its only 18000 permanent seats. The zoo might always be up but its still scaffold that would be a lot more expensive to replicate along the lines of the two other stands

Good point. Best I can see is this: $266M - seems to include everything (not just construction cost)
Dunedin’s stadium history is instructive. The initial cost was put at $188 million. The final costs, including land purchases and external advice, pushed the total cost to $266 million. (The Otago Regional Council paid $37.5 million because of the perceived regional benefits of the stadium.)
Be wary of Chch stadium estimates
There might also be competition for construction workers, as the stadium build will cross over with the city’s metro sports centre

@nzzp i thought i had heard over $300m but cant be bothered to look...still well short of $600m
looking back FoBarr is a pretty good design, two free standing stands, the ends are bolted on, roof is connected to the main stand but not structurally, the two big columns in the corners hold up that side, could have been built pretty much the same without the roof if budget had changed

It’s time for a good dose of CGI. Make the stadium affordable with 5000 seats and add the other 30000 spectators with computer graphics.

11 years and still not built. Now the price is likely too high. So sadly you might be right.

ah, the nostalgia...
I didn't like the refurbished Lancaster Park. I went to a test shortly after it opened and I felt too far away from the action. Also, even though it was a decent crowd, it seemed something was missing from the atmosphere. The whole stadium had a weird feel to me. I reckon it would have been a half arsed flop if it hadn't been damaged beyond repair.

@Crazy-Horse always thought the view, even from the top deck, was surprisingly good.
The thing i wasnt a huge fan of was how open it was, not as in a roof over the pitch....but even the stands were only partially covered, the bottom deck was almost completely uncovered, and the ends were just open to nothing, a bit of structure (like the current one has) at either end would have been good
