Official team list: note, TK Howden is actually starting and Gibson drops out of the team altogether.

This makes me think Gibson and Laubscher have Covid if they are unavailable and aren't injured.

@Canes4life Hard to say. We know the others in the "unavailable for selection" list are injured, but it doesn't say so.

@Stargazer it's odd they haven't mentioned Goosen, Scrafton and Umaga-Jensen. Maybe they should have another column that states 'leaving so we aren't selecting them anymore'.

Also, before anyone asks, I’m just making rumours about PUJ but wouldn’t be surprised if he left and joined his bro. With Riley Higgins coming through and Jordie Barrett playing a lot more at 12, it will make sense if he wants more time on the field to push for higher honours.

As Goosen and Scrafton are leaving, I can understand not selecting them to start if there are equally good options.

They should definitely be in the top 23 though.

The poor PUJ treatment continues. I think it's unfortunately a fairly safe bet he's going elsewhere and who can blame him.

It pains me to say it as I have been a big advocate for him since leaving school and I do think he's an international quality midfielder, I just feel like he hasn't had the consistent opportunity from the Canes to show his true potential. I hope that he still gets another opportunity to put on that All Black jersey, even if it means he has to prove himself at a different franchise.

@Canes4life yea for whatever reason he never gets given a consistent run of games. Having that elsewhere will help him.

Gonna suck watching him play against the Canes though. Good local product treated poorly by Holland.

Why isn't the media asking about this?

6th game in a row for Sullivan at 13

Personally I would have him in the AB squad. If the AB's a looking for midfield/wing cover on the bench he does a better job than Ennor, LF and PUJ

I've been extremely impressed wth him, sadly the squad will be small, so he may miss out. But I'd certainly take him over Ennor

@Duluth that's hard to argue with. Sullivan certainly has been one of New Zealand's form centres across both the NPC and Super Rugby which probably forces the Canes to either stick with Sullivan at centre or shift him out one to accommodate PUJ (with Jordie at 12). It sounds like they've decided on the former.

The surprise package who has been New Zealand's best attacking midfielder this season

The surprise package who has been New Zealand's best attacking midfielder this season

The 23-year-old was been given another chance with the Hurricanes and has found another life, even in a crowded midfield he has become the most dangerous attacking centre in the competition, statistically speaking.

Definitely has to be in the picture. He’s certainly been impressive on attack and I really liked how he went about his work on defence last week.

Someone can correct me if my memory is faulty, but didn't Fozzie say that they'd be using a smaller squad this year and unlikely to take in new players?

Well that’s a very narrow minded view if that’s the case. Even when we won the WC in 2015 we weren’t afraid to have virtually a rookie on the wing in NMS but his form was too hard to ignore that year.

Now I’m not comparing NMS to Sullivan, but If Sullivan continues this run of form surely he will be too hard to ignore aswell.

Continuity of selection was the words they used I believe.
34 or 36 player squad Foster was quoted.

Throwing a newbie on the wing is a lot different to throwing them in the mix elsewhere.

Yeah I saw that interview. He was talking about what’s likely to happen. They have used an unusual amount of players over two seasons (b/c injuries, covid etc). So the probability of new caps is low

Sullivan is playing well in a position without much depth. So that helps his chances. As does ALB’s injury
