I was curious about all the Canes tries this season, and who was involved. I'm just limiting it to the final phase or 2.

    Saders

Try 1: Goosen nice break, PUJ inside ball to Love.
Try 2: Nice work from Proctor & Jordie. Sullivan dots down.
Try 3: Jordie pops over a ruck.
Try 4: JGB breaks a tackle or two at the end of the game.

    Blues

    Try 1: Rayasi intercept.
Try 2: Sullivan nice kick through to Goosen.
Try 3: PUJ, Love & Rayasi nice interplay.
Try 4: Flanders, Iose interplay, with a great finish from Rayasi.
Try 5: Sullivan outside break, to Ardie.

    Highlanders

    Try 1: Rakete-Stones solo effort.
Try 2: Proctor runs a good line up close.
Try 3: PUJ good break and runs outside the defenders, nice inside pass to Henry.

    Moana

Try 1: Good straight tackle bust and run from Jordie.
Try 2: PUJ nice inside pass to Moorby to finish.
Try 3: Nice team try, Delany to Fidow to finish.

    Chiefs

    Try 1: TJ intercept.
Try 2: Ardie, JGB to Goosen nice try in corner.
Try 3: TJ, Proctor to Love, then nice finish by Julian.
Try 4: Ardie goes beast mode.

What's interesting is that 15 tries were by backs, 3 were by forwards but from distance (ie forwards running as backs almost).

Then the last 1 was the Ardie beast mode try.

So there have been 0 "boring" forward tries by the Canes this year.

It's also clear that Rayasi and PUJ are our most dangerous backs when they are actually on the field. Barrett, Love (when at 10) & Sullivan also have heavy involvement.

Proctor is much improved too. He has some nice touches in the tries he's involved with.

Maybe that is a weakness for the Canes.

@chris yea - although we clearly have a weaker pack to play a mauling style of game.

If Coles is fit, and we get some size with IWL & Sangster in the second row it becomes more viable, but it would be a bit foolhardy against most of the Kiwi teams.

Holland's favourite back row of Kirifi and Prinsep though doesn't add much weight.

I think you have a very good 23 but it is never selected.

Love at First five young but he does create things,PUJ at Centre Rayasi on the wing is dangerous.
Walker-Leware at lock or Sangster instead of Blackwell.

But you boy's already know this.

I have a really radical thought it might be worth investing in a forwards coach from the NH someone like Castrogivanni someone with experience just to add some “steel” to the Canes forwards.

@mikey07 the irony is Gibbes is a massive human, but he seems to love puff forwards.

judging by his Instagram I think Brayden iose might be out for awhile, it's a shame as you'd figure he would've saw a lot of game time coming up against the Aussie teams

He is absolutely one of the nicest people you'd ever meet (my mother adores him). I'm not sure whether that is a reason, but I could see him going for 'good' people.

There was a comment in the match thread about the media and the Canes. This morning in Stuff we get this from Knowler

OPINION: Jason Holland's decision to retain Jordie Barrett at second five-eighth may not get unanimous approval in Hurricanes country.

That's a good thing. The fans are entitled to their views, and if they are yapping about the team it shows they care. It's what makes sport a fun, and engaging, activity.

It's then up to the coaches and players to prove them wrong, or otherwise.

Hurricanes coach Holland will be certain of one thing. He can't afford to be distracted by others' opinions and by keeping Barrett at No 12, where he started during the 30-29 loss to the Chiefs last weekend, he will hope the big bloke can bang holes in the Crusaders' defensive line during their Super Rugby Pacific match in Wellington on Saturday night.

Now, the message is framed around Jordie at 12, a topic that no one is griping at on SM apart from comments regarding best use of the squad (e.g. PUJ and Sullivan) but the 'opinion' comes across as a retelling of a coffee conversation with the coach.

    Interesting

The biggest question right now is that happened to PUJ?

He was easily one of the most dangerous Canes backs early in the year, but he's been in and out of the team - and now it looks like he'll have another long road back.

Have there been injury issues that ar receiving less attention? Or, are there fitness issues? It's annoying that a player who was wearing an AB jersey a couple of years agao is nowhere to be seen but it gets ignored by the (shitty) rugby journalism in NZ.

@gt12 IIRC, the Blues were after him a couple of years ago. He should make the move.

JB has only signed a 1 yr contract in recent years so Holland might have to play him in his preferred position (i.e., 12) to increase the chances of him re-signing.

He definitiely should, but it's pretty crowded at the blues (assuming Ioane is at center and RTS sticks around). With Evans coming, I would say the Landers would be best.

I'd like him a the Chiefs but that depends on whether ALB and Nankivell will be sticking around - Nank feels like the sort of player who must be close to cashing in overseas as AB jersey feels a step too far with those ahead of him.

Probably not a team to join if you want to be in a strong XV. Better chance to make ABs from other squads.

Yes and no. It doesn't seem to be hurting Fakatava chances. I'll say this - he'd had a much better chance that playing club rugby in Wellington. Either way, I think we'll see TUG in a black jersey before PUJ.

@gt12 it's a complete mystery, the only thing Holland says on the matter is he loves the impact he brings from the bench. We know nothing otherwise.

I too wish our journos would probe this more, I mean he made the ABs, and played great, then since then he's been in & out of the team for 2 seasons.

The thing that's hard to fathom is that he's always excellent when he's on the field.

If Holland wasn't a complete dipshit and had any foresight we could develop a midfield of PUJ & Sullivan for the next 5 years. Sigh.

With only one team not named yet. Is there a Hurricanes Development team game that they haven't told us about?

@stargazer It's probably because the game is at 4.30pm, so if any last minute injuries they would want everyone available.
