@majorrage truth! He spent most of his Fresh Prince era mocking people (in character) for being bald, fat etc. Whether it was his auto-cue laugh or genuine, he was clearing laughing as the joke landed. We haven't yet seen the camera angle of their table and what went on with Jada. But she had an unhappy face and then Will is striding up for the slap down.
It was the yelling afterwards where I think people worked out it wasn't staged. Just a tad awks. -

The only thing that irked me was talking about loving one another in his acceptance speech. I'm assuming he has LOVE HATE across his knuckles?

It wasn't fake. This was the most important night in Will Smith's career. Now all people are talking about is his violence.
That is a good point……but the whole set up still seems a bit “staged” to me overall. The way Rock composed himself and kept talking ( then again, he could be an absolute pro ) indicates it was set up.
Maybe the truth will come out at some stage.

@mn5 see, i didn;t think he was composed at all, looked off to the side several times, stumbled over the next award etc, the slap is the only thing that looked fake but that could just have been down to smith pulling it last second, wanting to make the point but not actually hurt him...dont know

Relatively composed……not exactly shaking……pointing out that it was a joke and still chatting away.
