@kiwimurph same issues are still there: travel (and travelling fans), and playing summer/winter, and the strength of SA.
Durban is typically 29 degrees in January. You're going to take peopel from the snow, put them on a plane for at least 11 hours (to get to JoBurg), then get them to play in mid 20 degree heat. Can't see the athletes loving it, frankly.
Still, SA has money, so there's that.
Also, I'll believe it when I see it. This keeps getting floated, I'm still to be convinced it would fly

you're not wrong but it becomes a question of whats worse, those factors or doing even longer flights and having huge jet lag and having inconvenient times for games

To clarify: I don't think that's a worry for SA; I think it will be front of mind for the 6N (aka rivers of gold)

so, if they really, truly, totally are breaking up with us this time
does that mean rugby is a summer sport now?

@rotated said in Future of The Rugby Championship:
How does that work for the EOYT? If SA are effectively on a NH calendar and playing the 6N wouldn't that mean there is one less viable touring team and one more host demanding Tier 1 opponents?
unless they stay on the end of year tour away - and host in June
Edit: and play their comps between Nov and June, rather than June and Nov. Hell, it kinda lines up with what Super is now (played in that window)

Would Australia, NZ or Argentina be willing to undertake an away tour in June? They would need to otherwise they would never play them.

good point - missed that completely.

I also read that the SANZAAR CEO has hinted at wanting to play the RC earlier in the year to align with the 6N. No way that works with the summer weather and no rugby being played at that time in the SH.
Really? No, cos Super rugby pre season starts same time as 6N - so perfectly able to play same dates. Not saying it is a good idea, but it is certainly possible

So that makes pre season for pre season even earlier...

We need a Pacific comp with Japan & US. Otherwise we are circling the drain and may as well jump ship to League.
Still think Boks to 6N is a bad and unpopular idea, but money talks louder.
im coming around to this idea....but we need more than that otherwise will just end up with an italy in the 6N, i think if we do that then we need a club comp underneath it to bring up the level of rugby in those countries

so, straight in to test rugby with the players getting almost no break, and then training as the stepping stone
Sounds ideal...

we will absolutely murder Japan and the US every single year for eternity (the idea that an annual beating improves a team is an absolute myth). And again, someone will have to play in summer.

@taniwharugby I am not surprised.
See: all the reasons I have posed previously.
Frankly, the same issues apply wiht japan for us - summer games are a bit shite. Hemisphere weather is different.
A global calendar would align this, and revenue sharing would make it less important the comp you played in

Absolutely right. The idea that more rugby=better rugby is a fallacy, certainly over a short time frame. Quality over quantity every time. What is needed is a decent structure to allow the lower tier nations to improve. And by the way, this is not simply magicked by revenue sharing. Get your fucking house in order before you expect a financial leg up. This also though requires meaningful input from the tier 1 nations. It’s a fucking sop to say “oh we’ve played xyz tier 3 nation at hone and bunged them a few quid”. Meaningful, regular games. Maybe tier 1 second teams v tier 2/3., but every say 2 years. The money is there for that if all the big boys commit.

@catogrande all very true
But the major unions pay lip service only. It's all about dollars.
