Nothing particularly exciting to report except I can now do pull ups ( not chin ups ) with much less pain than before in the elbow which is exciting given I didn’t do much with it other than rest it and deep heat the shit out of it, apparently the stench was so overpowering I woke up to an empty bed on a couple of occasions as the girl decided the spare room was a better option. Never hurt when doing chins, just pull ups.
With these and diamond push ups ( you know those nasty ones ) I’m experimenting with super slow reps for a few weeks ( in amongst power type stuff the other days ). Loving it so far, the burn is incredible.
For the chins I literally do one rep of 45 seconds up, 45 seconds down ( if I can manage that ). Try it, absolutely brutal.
Pull ups can be murder on the joints. Definitely a different beast to chins.

@rancid-schnitzel I tend to do more neutral grip ones than pull/chin ups, find they are alot less stress on things.

They're good actually. But probably difficult for @MN5 to find a tree or pipe or whatever the fark he uses that can accommodate neutral grip!

Jungle gym works fine, bonus points if there are MILFs around.
I’ve decided to get some gymnastic rings, being Scottish I’ll get the cheapest pair and make sure I put the spare bed under them in case they can’t hold my weight.

I'm surprised they aren't used more. You only have to look at the guns on male gymnasts to see that they're highly effective.

Absolutely, #nohomo but they’re pretty impressive.

All shifted into the new pad and got a workout doing just that as I was helping the movers and seemed to get the heavy end on most of the stuff. Fridges, tables, beds etc out of an apartment block and into a three story house isn’t much fun at all.
The garage gym is looking basic, old school and functional, the tire is set up outside for smashing and I discovered a whole new world of ( good ) pain doing chin ups on a steel beam, I can literally only get my fingers half way on it so that fucken KILLS the forearms like you wouldn’t believe.
Having all this shit right at home will keep things nice and regular, loving it so far ! Next step is to find somewhere that sells gymnastic rings.

best to be careful doing them too much as that is something that will often lead to tennis/golfers elbow when there is too much focus there.

Absolutely, I do listen to my body but so far so good. Deep Heat and massages are extremely helpful.

As expected having the garage set up has been awesome. Amazing what I can do with fuck all equipment, I just have to resist the temptation to try and bust out too many chins everytime I go past the big beam, especially if I hang weights off the belt. @taniwharugby warned me well as the finger grip ones have the potential to wreck the shit out of the tendons if I do too many. Three sessions in one week was probably too many so I’ll rest up for a bit.
The garage is large but ugly as fuck. I hope one day I get the go ahead to make it look a bit nicer.

Trucking along quite nicely in the home gym. Working out in one way or another most days, very few days off and no excuses when the workout area ( grey dungeon with various weights and shit strewn around ) is at home.
The highlight during that period was managing a chin up with 54kg ( 2 x 20kg plates, 1 x 12kg kettlebell and 2 x 1kg metal weights ) hanging off me. Hard work at the top but I managed it. Chuffed to bits about that, more than half my bodyweight !
I’ve also got one son popping round every now and again to get in shape, the other fractured his foot at school so is out of action but I’m thoroughly enjoying giving him the benefits of my wisdom.

Better bump the thread and prove I haven’t keeled over.
Most notable fitness triumph was getting a punching bag, gloves and mitts off someone for $40 on FB marketplace. As suspected the punching bag was light ( 18kg on the scales, what the fuck ? ) so being a cheap Scotsman I pulled it apart and placed lots and lots of bags of sand ( in those little plastic bags you wrap your lunch in ) inside and got the fucker up to 44kg. Great for power punching although it’s pretty hard at the bottom so definitely not keen to swing too much after a few beers.
Can reliably inform all that it has some extremely satisfactory George Foreman like dents after I give it a bash.
Ok, maybe not quite to his standard but the principle is the same.
It’s tough to persuade the boys to hold the bag but they sometimes do if I bribe them.

Possibly inspired by the HIIT thread I thought I’d better write something here.
Trucking along ok, have decided to forgo chins on the beam as often as I can feel that if I keep going it will wreck havoc on the tendons, @taniwharugby was right. I’m on the lookout for one of those things you hook onto the door frame so will do some shopping over the weekend. Weighted chins aren’t too easy at the park…..
Tonight consisted of a cool circuit of smashing the tire 5 x each side and I mean REALLY smashing it, winding up and giving it full force so you can feel the hammer go through the tire and touch the ground as opposed to getting as many shitty reps in in a certain time frame. I supersetted this with 50 reps of skipping rope, alternating legs and did this 10 times in total. ( 100 tire slams, 500 skips )
I’ve also discovered these.
not sure why they’re called “Mike Tyson” push ups but give them a go, they’re awesome !
-
@taniwharugby said in MN5s muscle maintaining musings....:
@MN5 pretty sure they are Hindu push ups? Or at least a variation of.
Yeah not sure where the name ‘Mike Tyson’ came from. Sounds cooler though.

Bump…..
Chugging along and loving it, getting the music set up in the garage is a huge boost and bloody motivational. I bought one of those chin up bars that you screw into the doorway which has been really helpful for the old tendinitis. I’m reluctant to add too much weight in case it collapses but a highlight recently was smashing out eight good reps with 32kg hanging off me, fully clothed with shoes on I’m about 100kg so apparently that means my one rep max might be somewhere over 160kg which is pretty pleasing.
Skipping rope and tire slams means that the cardio is taken care of and I’m getting pretty handy at hitting the heavy bag for longer periods of time now.
Physical stuff is such a good stress reliever.

It's the absolute best. I'd be (an even bigger) mess without it.

yup, with the way the world is right now, I love the gym, put some tunes on, shut out the world and smash some tin, LOVE IT.
