I can literally only get my fingers half way on it so that fucken KILLS the forearms like you wouldn’t believe.

best to be careful doing them too much as that is something that will often lead to tennis/golfers elbow when there is too much focus there.

Absolutely, I do listen to my body but so far so good. Deep Heat and massages are extremely helpful.

As expected having the garage set up has been awesome. Amazing what I can do with fuck all equipment, I just have to resist the temptation to try and bust out too many chins everytime I go past the big beam, especially if I hang weights off the belt. @taniwharugby warned me well as the finger grip ones have the potential to wreck the shit out of the tendons if I do too many. Three sessions in one week was probably too many so I’ll rest up for a bit.

The garage is large but ugly as fuck. I hope one day I get the go ahead to make it look a bit nicer.

Trucking along quite nicely in the home gym. Working out in one way or another most days, very few days off and no excuses when the workout area ( grey dungeon with various weights and shit strewn around ) is at home.

The highlight during that period was managing a chin up with 54kg ( 2 x 20kg plates, 1 x 12kg kettlebell and 2 x 1kg metal weights ) hanging off me. Hard work at the top but I managed it. Chuffed to bits about that, more than half my bodyweight !

I’ve also got one son popping round every now and again to get in shape, the other fractured his foot at school so is out of action but I’m thoroughly enjoying giving him the benefits of my wisdom.

Better bump the thread and prove I haven’t keeled over.

Most notable fitness triumph was getting a punching bag, gloves and mitts off someone for $40 on FB marketplace. As suspected the punching bag was light ( 18kg on the scales, what the fuck ? ) so being a cheap Scotsman I pulled it apart and placed lots and lots of bags of sand ( in those little plastic bags you wrap your lunch in ) inside and got the fucker up to 44kg. Great for power punching although it’s pretty hard at the bottom so definitely not keen to swing too much after a few beers.

Can reliably inform all that it has some extremely satisfactory George Foreman like dents after I give it a bash.

Ok, maybe not quite to his standard but the principle is the same.

It’s tough to persuade the boys to hold the bag but they sometimes do if I bribe them.

Possibly inspired by the HIIT thread I thought I’d better write something here.

Trucking along ok, have decided to forgo chins on the beam as often as I can feel that if I keep going it will wreck havoc on the tendons, @taniwharugby was right. I’m on the lookout for one of those things you hook onto the door frame so will do some shopping over the weekend. Weighted chins aren’t too easy at the park…..

Tonight consisted of a cool circuit of smashing the tire 5 x each side and I mean REALLY smashing it, winding up and giving it full force so you can feel the hammer go through the tire and touch the ground as opposed to getting as many shitty reps in in a certain time frame. I supersetted this with 50 reps of skipping rope, alternating legs and did this 10 times in total. ( 100 tire slams, 500 skips )

    I’ve also discovered these.

not sure why they’re called “Mike Tyson” push ups but give them a go, they’re awesome !

Yeah not sure where the name ‘Mike Tyson’ came from. Sounds cooler though.

    Bump…..

Chugging along and loving it, getting the music set up in the garage is a huge boost and bloody motivational. I bought one of those chin up bars that you screw into the doorway which has been really helpful for the old tendinitis. I’m reluctant to add too much weight in case it collapses but a highlight recently was smashing out eight good reps with 32kg hanging off me, fully clothed with shoes on I’m about 100kg so apparently that means my one rep max might be somewhere over 160kg which is pretty pleasing.

Skipping rope and tire slams means that the cardio is taken care of and I’m getting pretty handy at hitting the heavy bag for longer periods of time now.

Physical stuff is such a good stress reliever.

It's the absolute best. I'd be (an even bigger) mess without it.

Bumping this thread yet again seeing as another couple of fossils have done the same.

Can confirm I’m still trucking along, latest addition to the MN5 home gym set up is a dip bar ( basically an old bike stand which I drilled into the desk in the garage ). Much like the chin up bar I have to be careful with the amount of weight I add on it so the fucken thing doesn’t collapse and injure me but going well so far. With the dips and chins I’m really focussing on FULL ROM and perfect form. If I’m honest with the chins after one of the boys filmed me ( fucks sake Dad, not again ! ) I realised it could have been better so I’ve left the ego at the door and dropped the weights/reps a tiny bit ( still currently maxing out at 32kg x six on chins though ! ) and making them full reps, not half assed shitty ones. When you’re chasing numbers it’s so easy to compromise on form.

Leg strength and power is taken care of by sledgehammer swings, weighted lunges, skipping and various plyometric jumps. I’ve found I can’t go up stairs without the gristle in my knees really grinding which is possibly mildly concerning. Big hill walk with the girl yesterday, muscles in the pins feel fine but the knees are a bit achy, fuck getting old sux. I also can’t punch the bag without my elbow clicking noisily as well ! That is going great, I managed to actually punch and break the hook holding the bag the other day, just call me Earnie Shavers.

Have set a few fitness goals for summer which I’ll think about writing down on here. My work/life balance living where I am is ideal so there is NO excuse for not having the time to get there…..the only potential bugbear might be recovery/rest/defying age etc.

Keep the body active fellas, you only have one.

It’s fucken humbling when you go back to an exercise that you used to nail and struggle a bit with it.

In this case it was weighted Diamond push ups. I used to do these nice and comfortably, could max out at about 20 or so with 20kg on my back but having not done them for months and wanting a bit of a change from the dips I had to bow out at 14 reps. Worse still the DOMs this afternoon got sore as fuck particularly in the shoulders. I woulda thought the dips would have carried over on these really well, not to be.

I should hopefully nail 20 reps again sooner rather than later.

It'll come back. That's a pretty specific exercise so no wonder the DOMs came after a good while of not doing them. Just shows you have to keep on doing these movements or the body simply forgets. I cringe to think about what happens to the body of someone who is basically sedentary and glued to a screen from the cradle onwards.

Reminds me of this awesome quote from Socrates:

"No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable."

Dude even scratching my head is causing me some very minor discomfort. I think it goes to show how important those little stabilisers are and how important it is to train them.

Supposed to be doing dips tomorrow, not happening til I feel 100% again.

    Trucking along nicely.

The strength in the diamond push ups seems to have come back which is in huge relief, also doing a bit of this stuff…..

If you can get over the fact this guy has the personality of a dead fish he actually says some pretty beneficial stuff. Being the piston wristed gibbon I am and with T shirt season upon us ( yes even in Wellington sometimes ) there is some great advice here. Top gymnasts are strong as fuck.

An incident at my sons cricket reminded me to keep doing bits of everything though.

I’d been standing in the classic “Dad watching sport pose” ( one leg in front of the other, arms crossed ) for about an hour and a half when one of the kids hit a boundary and I had to move quick to try and get the ball ( I missed sadly )……the creaking and lack of flexibility when I needed it for a sudden movement really threw me.

I warmed up and gave the boys some good throw downs but standing in one spot in the same pose meant I’d essentially seized up and needed a bit of a shake up to get limber again. Really stink. Do I need to do more stretching and flexibility stuff or succumb to the fact I’m getting old ?

Not too much to add except I hopped on the scales this morning and have hit 100kg for the first time in ages. Probably not surprising given the vast quantities of bacon, ham ( apparently these two come from the same animal ), Chicken, croissants, bubbly, Beer ( wasn’t pissed but was steadily consuming ALL day as we were hosting ) and Red Wine that I had.

Pretty warm in the nations capital but looking forward to a bit of cardio and weights in the garage at some stage. The girl is home so unfortunately hitting the heavy bag isn’t an option so skipping and mountain climbers it is !!!!

For functional strength and to get the guns really burning I’m also loving throwing the heavy bag ( again, only when the girl is out ). Aching muscles and tired lungs after I did a few of those.

Definitely easier overindulging in Canada where some of my family are when you can cover up with about ten overcoats. Much tougher in shorts and T shirt here.

    New York marathon confirmed.

93.4 kg currently. 4 months out need to be 85. So that gives me 5 months to lose 8.5 kg.

Time for some serious graft. Will be 46 by then, so will be tough to improve times.

    Damn I wish I was 93.4kg…

I might start one of these threads of my own - I have entered the Port Mac Ironman this May - just over 3 months to get into some sort of shape to get through it

I look a bit emaciated at 93kg, 100kg suits me ok these days.

I'm 69. But 5'8. This would be you at that weight
