France v Ireland

I like, to one degree or another, most of the pundits, although all have an annoying element but by fuck the Scots and Irish pundits do like to big up their own guys. . Case in point today, Andy Nichol: here comes the child-man. His musculature is incredible. WTF?

Cracking match

Firstly ,it was great to see the worlds best official Angus Gardiner in action , the way he managed the players in and around the breakdown was superb and also taking control of what looked like a nothing penalty and overturning it for some obstruction from Bundee Aki that was called by the AR.
On the game , always thought despite the Irish battling back to within a point , the French had the game in the bag..great breakdown work saw some superb counter rucking and fierce linespeed pressure on the Irish ball carriers saw handling errors ..
A really enjoyable watch. -

Jaminet with the winning try for France. 32-24 with kick to come. Three minutes to go.
No try. Ridiculous decision. French crowd not happy at all.
I'm not happy either, would be spitting if it was my team. FFS.
Totally the right call. Ref called held up in real time, TMO confirmed. Gardner was on song most of the match

I have only seen the highlights clip but Angus was possibly the only one with a decisive view. We needed a cam from behind at the right angle for that.
I don't think it was outrageous to call held up. The was a good chance that any evidence would be on the TMO replay.Although it is still possible that the ball touched the grass (some would say probable), there was no evidence.

The French forwards were impressive and won most of the collisions. They showed Foster what level of physicality is required to win a game against the top NH nations.
They were blowing out their arses in the last 20 min. Ireland with too many simple mistakes including, incredibly going for 3 points when 6 points down and 10 minutes to go.

Both sides were knackered, at least a good handful of the French had covid a couple of weeks ago too

fair. I didn't have audio on - but if so, maybe the TMO is correct.
That said, I'd be gobsmacked if some part of that ball didn't touch some grass. Maul tries get awarded without sighting - what's different here? Still, Gardner made the call

The wrong call IMO. The only arm under the ball was the attacker's. The TMO was then looking for irrefutable proof the ball itself touched the grass which wasn't conclusive. The call should've been try, possibly held up.

I don't agree. The Irish player puts his arms around the ball too. Gardner made the correct call in my opinion.
-
@antipodean can you name a better official at the minute ..?

Great game, real test match. France edge Ireland up front and so come away with the win. The game has evolved again and the big tighties have become really important in getting the teams over the gain line with the rush defenses being so tight.
ABs (and Aussie for that matter) won't win consistently against the top sides unless major strategy changes are made. -

I didn't think the Irish defender actually got under the ball preventing its grounding as the base of the ball is free at the Frenchman's elbow. It's just the replays don't show it as the elbow is in the way and the cameraman was too inept to have the grass in shot.

Gardner is Barnes Lite. At least Barnes knows the laws. Ben O’Keeffe is a much better ref.
-
@antipodean i have been in a privelidged position to have asked several All Bkacks that same question ..they all came back with Angus Gardner ..i rest my case , i think Barnes and Okeefe are good officials, you may have a case for Barnes as even i think hes very good , Okeefe is on the cusp of being a very good official, only time will tell.
If you really want to know what bad is ,Brendon Pickerall comes to mind..i would even have Jaco Peyper before Pickerall and thats saying something , to understand what your defintion of bad is , let me throw these names at you ..Stuart Berry (SA) Matt Carling ( Eng) Nick Berry (Aust) James Leckie (Australia) Mike Adamson (Scotland) clown who missed an obvious knock on by welsh centre tomkinson in game against Australia and theres our good friend from Jerome Garces from France who is like a lucky dip , you dont know what you are going to get..
Luke Pearce from England is one to watch moving forward..
At the end of the day , who you like as an official is subjective ..
