    A little more information in this article about the coaching setup.

    Neil Barnes' departure had seen McMillan take on the lineout coaching. David Hill's defensive brief will increase, and Gatland will work alongside Hill to provide some guidance. Former Black Ferns Sevens coach Allan Bunting will also be involved in skills coaching with the group alongside his coaching of the Chiefs' Manawa team in the women's competition.

    It doesn't say who is in charge of the forwards, and whether Nick White has increased responsibilities.

    Chiefs shaping up well for 2022 season - McMillan

    For a team that has suffered more on the injury front than most, the Chiefs look set to start the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific competition in better shape than for some years.

    “The 10 situation is probably one of the most contestable positions in the team,” McMillan said.

    It should just be a shoot out between Ioane and Gatland?

    Trask looks more like a fullback and Reihana isn't ready

    @Tim As you obviously have a NZH premium subscription can you please post the text from the article about Atu Moli from a couple of days ago. I'm curious what he has to say.

    Yep it would seem that way Duluth, though Trask is still a boy I see going pretty well at 10 as he comes on. You probably right about Reihana, like the boy, but may need a year or 2 yet.

    @duluth Chiefs big focus should be trying to get Ioane to play to his potential as their starting 10 as soon as possible. Gatland is a solid player but not good enough to win a comp with - Ioane's ceiling is much higher.

    Tom Vinicombe is an Aussie isn't he? I can't say I agree with his team.

    Let's see who McMillan selects to start for Friday's game. The ABs are back this week so if the likes of Weber, ALB etc are starting in Rd 1 there is no reason to think that Taukei’aho won't either.

    Ioane has to start, and there is some competition in the back three positions. I'd actually like to see Stevenson at fullback because he is better under the high ball than Trask and his kick-return can be a weapon.

    If they roll out that team, I'll be moaning about the coaches even earlier this year.

    Why. It's not meant to be the best team just a possible first round one given that some ABs may be given longer breaks and some squad members didn't get much rugby last year.

    Some other explanation here

    How the Chiefs plan to reintegrate their All Blacks

    How the Chiefs plan to reintegrate their All Blacks

    The re-introduction and management of international players throughout Super Rugby is always a hot topic of discussion and the extended test season in 2021 has made for an even more complex beast this season.

    @crucial

    In honesty, it would depend on the rest of the 23, but that's a must-win game so I hope we play some more ABs.

    At 10, Gatland is not the answer, we have to see if Ioane can set the team up for success. It doesn't matter if you are the coach's son or not, this isn't under 15s.

    Totally agree about Gatland but we are also only guessing about how well Ioane is going at training and have no idea how ready the ABs are.
    The second article explains that all are available but the coaches won’t pick them unless totally ready.
    A player that is 90% as good as the top guy is a better option if the top guy is 80% ready. ….. kind of
    I guess we will see. I have no doubt they will put out the best team they can, it just may not be what we think it should be.

    @crucial

    I reviewed our squad and we are either the 3rd best team or the 5th. We have potentially a very dangerous forward pack, good halves (could be really good if Ioane turns it on), and a solid midfield.

    The back three though… some players really need to stand up this year - ENS and/or Stevenson are crucial if our back three is to be really dangerous. If both of them don’t become a consistent threat, while remaining defensive liabilities (at times), we’ll struggle to put out a back three that can really cause trouble.

    I’m hoping that Narawa turns out to be a good pickup.

    @gt12 It remains to be seen if McMillan favours some of his BOP players. I'm thinking of Trask and Narawa in the backline, in particular.

    Both are question marks.

    With Tiatia there, we could have lots and lots of rocks/diamonds in the back three…

    They are playing 3 x 30 mins so expect plenty of substitutions.

    @bovidae could have been a good game to try ENS at fullback but they seem wedded to the idea of all these 10/15s
