Oh boo fucking hoo. Shouting obscenities about him, the horror! Would never take place at, say, an Eden Park Bledisloe...
Not that I'm condoning it necessarily, but it's part of sport. Better than playing in front of an empty stadium in round 2 of the Bumfuck Open.
I love the special K show. The crowd is a zoo and yeah they whip them up. Fantastic. Should be more of it. Since when did we decide tennis had to be played in complete silence?
They are setting out to entertain, in a sport that is supposed to be entertaining. I'd be fine with it if it was a pair of Brits at Wimbledon, or yanks at the US Open too. Or at the Davis Cup (as it used to be played anyway). Tennis needs more heaving, hostile home crowds, not less.Aussie take.
Kiwi take: Aww bro that Auzzie duckhead totally showed our boi mad disruspuct, aye. Need to get him down to Dunedin and show him how we do it down here on the South Island, aye. Get some locals, blast a bit of Dave Dobbyn, throw a few Speights in the chilly bin and he'll be wishing he never put his foot on a court, aye. You'd never see our Ruchie or Beaudie or Buck carry on like thut, aye!!!
Good old Australian diplomacy to smooth down the incidents, take on a mock NZ accent.
Oh sorry, I got confused and forgot this was the United Nations General Assembly. I thought I was on the fucking Fern for a second!

Venus, 34, on Wednesday said the sledging from the crowd was at times intolerable and some spectators made comments about him and his family as he prepared to serve. The on-court tension between Venus and Kyrgios, in particular, was noticeable and both had words with each other and the umpire over perceived injustices. Kyrgios also mocked Venus’s at-times wayward ball toss. Venus said on Wednesday that Kyrgios’s supporters messaged him on social media “an extreme amount” but there were also “a lot of messages from other people saying how embarrassed they were with the crowd’s behaviour and they’re sorry, it shouldn’t have been like that”. ... “Between serves [THEY WERE]geeing the crowd up and getting them to cheer at times like that. I don’t think that’s really on. “You know if it’s on the other foot, old mate [KYRGIOS]would have flipped his lid. He already did get mad there by himself. It’s amazing, he can smash a ball out that hits a kid and just ’cause he gives them a racket afterwards people can say he’s such a good guy.”
Nope, sounds like he is a knob.
As for the crowd, is sledging his family ok? If it is fine with Glenn McGrath I guess it is fine by me.I've paid to see people play at the Open, I wouldn't pay to see that sort of crowd behaviour.
Of course sledging his family isn't OK, but how is that Kyrgios fault? I didn't realise waving his arms between points was code for 'sledge this guy's family'.
You may think Kyrgios is a knob, I disagree. I think old mate Venus comes across as a bit of a sook.

Yeah I don't disagree. But I kind of like that. He's unafraid to put himself out there, warts and all. He's a bit dumb, he can be a hothead, and always a few bad serves away from a meltdown.
But I really enjoy watching him, and I want him to win so I can keep watching him. He makes tennis more fun.
-
@dogmeat True. He knows that, though. If he knuckled down, worked hard and eliminated the showboat stuff he'd be in the top 10. But he doesn't want to do that for whatever reason. People get quite frustrated with that, but it's ultimately his call. It's an individual sport and he can do what he likes.
-
Speaking of McEnroe I tend to agree with his comments
McEnroe fully backs Kyrgios’ theory that tennis needs more “personalities”. “You need to have a rooting interest in someone,” he said. “Whether you think he’s the bad guy, some people think Djokovic is Darth Vader. Everyone loves Roger Federer. “It’s not like it is in team sports where you can root for your city or your country, so this idea of expressing yourself and showing personality is very important.”

The thing I dislike about him, is that he just doesn't have that desire to win. That fighters instinct. He swings for the fence, and if it comes off it comes off. If not, he'll find someone to blame.
Remember how disliked Lleyton was early on? Then everyone grew to love him because he refused to lose, ever. You had to beat the cnt 3 x on every point.
Kyrios on the other hand has quit more points, games and tournaments than I care to remember. Still could be worse I guess, he could be Bernie Tomic.

The trade off between the trophies and who he wants to be.
Probably figures he's worth enough so it isn't about the money.

This I mostly agree with.
I don't like the crowd behaviour as they were affecting play in some games. I'd be happy if there are more crowds and more enjoy tennis, I just think knocking on the side of boards and chanting/talking over players isn't on.
The Special K or whatever the cereal killers are called aren't directly responsible for crowds sledging their opponents. But mocking their opponents' serve-gamemanship, I just don't like it. I wouldn't like it at club or Pennant level and I don't need to see it at Pro level."You may think Kyrgios is a knob, I disagree."
In an earlier singles game, (against Medvedev I think?) he told an umpire to shut up and listen to him. At that point, I definitely thought he was a knob.

Bernie Tomic-I just don't like. He comes across as an entitled oaf and gives up if a snowflake caresses his shoelashes, but he has a smart tennis brain-what a waste.

And there I was, complimenting Australian diplomacy. Is that not allowed on the Fern? I don't have a problem with your linguistic attempts, it reads like our dialects, just a little more evil.

Tomic is a genuine cnut. The difference between him and Kygios to me is off court, where Kyrgios comes across as a pretty good dude generally while Tomic lives on the Goldie, drives a orange lambo and just lurches from one fuck-up to the next.
-
@barbarian isn't Tomic's dad poisonous as well? or am I thinking of someone else. Not sure how he feels about tennis these days but isn't a lot of Kygios's angst about not liking tennis much, but being so talented he'd be a fool to walk away? I've warmed to him although I'm nowhere near McEnroe reach arounds.
-
@paekakboyz yep Tomic's dad is a big part of the problem.
-
The ‘Special K’s’ in a good battle here against the 3rd seeds Granollers and Zeballos. Would be great if the two Aussies made the final

The crowd made it exciting. But you don't encourage them to carry on when the player is ready to serve, or between serves, and then pretend to lose your shit when the serve time limit clock runs out. The bogan crowd lapped that shit up. Contrast that with other great crowds, the Connors Krickstein crowd, Sampras vs Courier in Melbourne, or Rafter Ivanisevic in the Wimbledon final. That one was wild because the weather postponed the final to the Monday and they let the crowds in. Amazing atmosphere, but the players didn't act like total cocks
