@donsteppa I just had a look on Cricinfo and seems like Rossco - prior to this series - hadn't had an innings in the middle since the WTC Final. Nothing more than club cricket, anyway.
So he might also have been a guy with no form having a swipe to try to clear the vultures around the bat and hoping to get a couple out of the middle to find his form.
Why hasn't he played any cricket?

So, umm ...
At least we beat 26.
What is the biggest ever margin by runs?
Shit... we're not even going to make the top 10.

I don't follow NZ domestic cricket apart from reading the odd news article and various threads on here, but are there seriously no options floating around apart from Mitchell? I haven't seen anything to suggest he is a proper long term test batting option. He looks like an all-rounder when he bats, except he is not much of a bowler I know it's 'only' Bangles...

The four day comp is still only in the very early stages this year, the only other names that come to mind for me are Finn Allen (more on his short form record), and Glenn Phillips. A look back at last year's batting records suggests a few new names, though not many that I know much about... https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?id=13761;type=tournament
Colin de Grandhomme's domestic form hasn't been great from the bits and pieces I've seen at Bay Oval, and on the stats.
Edit: posted the wrong link - see the post further down

@donsteppa What's not very encouraging about that list is the lack of any really big scores. To play test cricket as a batsman, I reckon you need to be capable of scoring a double century.
You've got Blundell making 150, Cooper making 146* and Nicholls making 126* (plus making 2 centuries). The other guy who made two centuries is McClure - but, his top score is 107.
Across the stats, you'd say Nicholls was the outstanding batsman of the season, which sets a pretty known benchmark.

Not really, this is NZ after all - even when we have 8-10 good batting options, we're only a few injuries/retirements/form slumps away from disaster.
-
Oops - brain explosion. It would have helped if I'd linked to the 2020/21 Plunket Shield instead of the Ford Trophy! I think I had that in mind given there was supposed to be a game (now washed out) starting today...
Some similar names in the mix
Here's the current 2021-22 season link, from between 2 -4 games played: https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?id=14226;type=tournament

I think injuries to KW and Conway and some shite form from Rossco and Nicholls has exposed us somewhat.

There aren't any hidden batting gems out there in the FC ranks.
If you take Kyle Jamieson as the the youngest regular member of the blackcaps and assess those younger than him on the FC scene - who are look as could be potentially really good international cricketers. You get about 6. (of which 4 in my list are batsmen)
R Ravindra
F Allen
G Phillips
N Smith
B Sears
(also M Chapman, who's about the same age as Jamieson). All but Nathan Smith have had a taste of blackcaps now.
If the discussion is how close do we have to a Ross Taylor level replacement? Ravindra should be capable of being a 40+ averaging batsman. So, yes, we do. But, nothing is a given.
Finn Allen looks like being a more extreme version of Martin Guptill. More promising even than him at white ball, but his red-ball is quite concerning already for a guy who is 22 already.

By floating around, what do you mean?
If you take the team from the WTC final as the 'first 11'. Then Mitchell is already among 3 batsmen who have played since (Young, Mitchell, Ravindra). So, he's one of 3.
Anyway. I've been really impressed with Mitchell and think he could be a good test batsman for next 3 to 4 years. Not at 3, I don't know what that is about. a 5 or 6, or even 4.
When Darryl first came on to the provincial scene about a decade ago I checked him out quite a bit, Intrigued a bit by his Perth teenage years. I saw a guy with the best pullshot I'd ever seen from a NZer but was pretty terrible against spin. Used to get himself tangled up in his pads a-la Chris harris and Jacob Oram. Get really tied down. With Neesham and Anderson already in his position, and with that weakness, I pretty much dismissed him, Then CdG got promoted from nowhere about 2 or 3 years later to usurp Neesham and Anderson ... no chance.
I've been really impressed since he's come into the blackcaps last year and I've watched him again for first time in ages. Was really impressed with how he atttachked Yasir Shah last season. But attacking spin in NZ and playing out over after over of the stuff in India - are different beasts. Anyway, impressed again.
He's a 29/30 year old who knows his game. has confidence, clarity, not over-awed.
I reckon we could get a lot of prodcutive years out of him at 5 or 6.
With Taylor and CdG on way out, he would also provide some needed strike-rate impetus in our one-paced top to middle order.

Yep, when the side was first listed on Day One I assumed the various TV and Cricinfo editors had made a lazy straight swap of Williamson and Mitchell in the list. I didn't genuinely expect Mitchell to walk out at 3.
Having a 5, 6, 7 of Mitchell, Ravindra, and Blundell (in that order?) could make for a balanced middle order and fifth/sixth bowling options. Assuming Nicholls shifts up one if no Taylor - among other possibilities.

An interesting set of names.... Neesham has gone from a player that we used to worry about being injured ahead of Test series in the mid-2010's, to not even in the conversation for the red ball game. Though I see his first class batting average remains at 32, so maybe that's why his Twitter bio seems to have been updated to hitting "a white ball" with a stick. I wonder if he still has a role to play yet, but maybe he's in the same bracket as Ish.
I was wondering 'what happened to Corey Anderson?' just the other day, I see from last year he may switch allegiances to the US: Former Black Caps star Corey Anderson signs three-year contract with USA Cricket

I do wonder what happened to Neesh at test level, he had a bloody good start with two hundreds in close succession but faded after that.
Anderson looked a long term superstar, shit anyone who can outscore Jesse Ryder in a partnership must be good, but again, what the fuck happened there New Zealand Cricket ?
I thought they’d be duking it out for the all rounder spot in the BCs for years.
-
I think Anderson had a crisis of confidence. I think he described it himself as imposter syndrome. He'd always felt he'd been elevated above his true abilities. Right from when he debuted for Canterbury as a 16 year old. I think it truely un-ravelled for him at Mumbai Indians rather than with NZC.
Neesham lost his test spot on the Australian tour of 2015/16. Was replaced by Santner to re-juggle bowling options for a the unknowns of the first pink ball test; Adelaide - usually 2 spinners, but swing under lights, pink ball, more grass to protect the ball. Then CdG got the spot in the home summer and owned it for 5 years.
I think it was a quite sensible allocation of resources for both Neesham himself and by 'NZC' for him to then focus on white ball.

I thought he went home injured from that tour? (Just checked - yep). CdG certainly then made the spot his own for a while though.
