Latham and Young through to tea. Young in particular looking very comfortable.

That's a dream start on a pretty dodgy pitch. The variable bounce is somewhat offset by how slow the pitch is, but it always feels like one with your name on it will be around the corner.

Still a mammoth task ahead, as we need a significant first innings lead to stay in the match really, we don't want to be chaing more than 100 batting last on this pitch.

Young looking really good and Latham supporting well. Bloody good foundation so far.

Gotta love the Police siren when anyone bowls a no ball. It’s very “Indian”

Careful. That comment overstepped the mark.

Young and Latham can take a fucking bow, that's an absolutely huge effort to get through to stumps no wickets down. Honestly being rolled for 120 odd was not off the cards on a dodgy Indian pitch against an onslaught of spin, so 129/0 is an amazing result.

Still... a big ask again tomorrow to knock off the deficit, but they've got us back in the game.

That makes 2 saves for Latham due to inside edges. The first one was hard to spot but really the umpire should have seen the second one.

How many DRS saves is that for the match? 6? 7?

    Seems a lot.

Fair to say that some have been close but ...

The umpires' performance would have pleased this guy

@pepe Southee is some bowler. Amazing figures in India

The graphic they flashed up before said he had 48 wickets at 23 against India. Which would explain why he's playing!

First name on the team sheet in my book…

Not with this team. Too much talent.

So pleasing seeing Young do well and seeing him look relaxed and assured. What happens when Conway comes back ? Talk about good problems to have.

That wasn't a sleight on this team, very very good teams go to India and get rolled by their spinners after long periods in the field. That showed incredible mental fortitude to tough it out like that.

Also thank fuck for DRS, those decisions against Latham are exactly what it is for - when the players knows the umpire got it wrong.

    Brilliant day by blackcaps.

Despite that. Due to India keeping it tight in last session, us batting last, my ingrained pessimism, .... ys still trailing by over 200 makes me very nervous.

But cant have asked for more. Big ups to Timmy and the other bowlers, and these 2 openers.

Tend to agree, need to make some runs before the pitch breaks up, anywhere near parity to the Indian first innings will make both second innings interesting

Sometimes a dodgy wicket or tough conditions actually helps certain batsmen. It might sound counterintuitive, but it forces greater concentration and application.

Yeah I’m happy with technology when it helps cover potential human error.

Nothing irks me more in cricket than decisions that are howlers

Well I couldn't be happier with this situation. We're in a healthy position against a tier 1 nation, with two set batsmen and coverage resumes - on Sky too - at beer o'clock
