Plus doomsayers like Stephen Hendry are all over the media. Today he's on about we will need to be in the Red zone for most of next year even at 90% because look at the UK. Hundred's dying every day which extrapolates to 20+ every day in NZ. Oh the humanity.
Fuckin’ A. He should stick to snooker. I remember his 147 against Ronnie O’Sullivan, a thing of beauty. But his Covid modelling isn’t to the same standard.
Edit: Your sentiments are spot on though...

@canefan Last poll I saw still had majority in favour of the governments stance.
If Akl was reasonably blase until Delta hit why wouldn't the rest of NZ be now? Especially when feed a diet of We are doomed liberally sprinkled with a garnish of Fuck We are AMAZING - the envy of the world.
I’ve struggled with this preoccupation of the media over here. Why the need to be the envy of the world? It’s not a competition, there’s no prizes that matter except that we are safer than we would be otherwise. It’s such a cultural cringe, I wish they’d give it a rest.

Mate, you should see how we react ….

People have understood the misery of MIQ for most of the time since Covid arrived - there has been no shortage of stories about the inequities and difficulties caused, whether it's temporary visa holders on the wrong side of the border when the drawbridge went up, NZers stuck overseas or other issues. We had the Aussie bubble, and it is a major cause of the current MIQ misery, but even that just doesn't resonate that much with people.
Yep, it would be convenient to pin it on the media that "NZers are beginning to understand the absolute misery the MIQ is causing to a lot of people. The media are starting to report it at last". The more depressing reality is that they've been reporting it all along, to mainly deaf and disinterested ears.

Dr McElnay says there are 163 new COVID-19 cases, including 159 in Auckland and four in Waikato.
There is also a second death of someone isolating at home with COVID-19. They were located in Mt Eden and were recently treated in hospital. Both deaths reported this week are being investigated as part of a review by Ministry of Health and Auckland DHBs.
There are 69 people in hospital with COVID-19. Six of these are in ICU or HDU
-
Another treatment added to the toolkit.

If any of you poor buggers stuck overseas want to get rid of MIQ the national party have a petition to get rid of it. Must be vaxed, negative test, etc.
I'm not particularly pro one party or the other, but I have seen the awful results of MIQ on people and many of you on here not being able to get home, so here it is:
-
@snowy I've posted it elsewhere. That petition is pretty obtuse
WTF does "Just two fully vaccinated travellers in MIQ have tested positive later than day 8 since August 23" mean? Why have they chosen eight days? How many have tested positive before day eight?
Not trying to ignore the plight of those waiting to get into MIQ, but it's symptomatic of National's wooly headed thinking on Covid.
Their own site is contradictory. It still has their plan for a refined MIQ up - so not ending MIQ at all. In addition it has their latest plan - light on detail as with every politician.
If you come from certain nominated countries, are double vaxed and have a negative test result you can enter without any issues. Otherwise you isolate at home for 7 days.
It's not that different from what Labour announced except for the timeframe - which of course National will never be bound by. Pure politicking with no prospect of a meaningful result.
Potential issues:
Immediately stops containment within the Auckland region
People breaking home isolation rules
Ignores the possibility of contracting the virus en route (which we know has happened a lot)I'm not supporting the status quo or being a Stephen Hendry but it's so easy to be a nay sayer when you know you'll never be called to account. This petition is simply grandstanding and National know it. It's meaningless except maybe as a way to vent frustration.
-
@snowy Pretty much my thinking too. I know it is pure politicking without any substance but they are the only ones attempting to put pressure on so I "signed it". First time I have had anything to do with that party. Ardern just smiles and says, "be kind" while her policies are less than kind.

@tim so 'naki, Napier and Gisborne...be that bloody Three Waters thing!
Seriously though, concerning, ideally it just creeps out into our communities...surely it cant have been in our communities too long without detection?
Two new cases of Covid-19 in Kaitaia have been announced on Friday afternoon on the Northland District Health Board’s Facebook page.
This brings the total number of cases in Northland during the Delta outbreak to 17, with nine recovered and eight active.
Local district councillor Felicity Foy said: “I have concerns for the new Covid cases because I understand they’re not vaccinated.”
Foy is worried about the spread of Covid-19 in the Far North as there are limited health services and long travel distances.
Her message to the community was this: “Either get the vaccination or get the immunity from getting Covid, I know which one I’d rather have.

I feel like this is the place for the Winter is Coming memes, but with Covid.
My totally unscientific prediction is that Cabinet will set a D-Day in December - the country is likely to be well past 80% double dose by end of November, and the laggards will be the small DHBs.

@snowy Yeah. I don't disagree with you but this publicity whoring by National doesn't move us forward even a millimeter.
Disagree. They are part of the pressure that is forcing the government to backpedal.
Put aside your dislike of National for a minute, it doesn’t have to a perfect alternative, the pressure just needs to stop Labour sleep walking to disaster.
