Until reading that article I hadn't appreciated that the ABs spent so much of the 2nd half defending in their own half. As I've said before, I wasn't that stressed being at Eden Park but it was probably worse watching on TV.
That was a great 3 weeks at the business end of the tournament as I went the QF, SF and final, as well as the England-France QF.
I don't know where you were sitting mate, but I was totally bricking it! The crowd went so quiet and the cops came out to line the field in the second half, I was so afraid we would lose
I was confident we were going to win it too, the crowd didn't go quiet where I was sitting.

Late second half, we seemed to have been defending 8-7 forever.
I felt a penalty would come for sure and can remember saying, "this is slipping away".
I was in the ASB stand and was behind the frog 10 when he took and missed the go ahead kick

We just couldn't extend the lead, all of memories of the French beating us started creeping in, and the weight of 24 years. I remember trying to cheer the boys on as much as possible because the punters around me were quiet, trying to get them going. My mate was so stressed he disappeared up the stairs and watched from the concourse. The feeling at the whistle was unbelievable, I seem to remember the ABs doing a haka right in front of us as the crowd went mental. Still wouldn't trade being there for anything though

I was over the moon after the match. Woke my 15 month year old up with a massive woohoo. We stuck it out, we dug in and McCaw was not going to let us lose!! My son who was 8yo, who started watching with me but was in and out of the room during the match came running in after I shouted and just hugged me.

The issue was the Weepu and Cruden injuries during the warm up and first 20 minutes. Obviously so much time had been invested into Carter and Slade going into the tournament, then Weepu as a playmaker and Cruden. Would Ellis and Donald have even ran plays at training that week even in passing?
So you have two guys with serious limitations at test level without an established connection playing 9 and 10. It's no surprise that the game tightened up. Even if France had have been prepared to kick to our back three more I wonder if we would have had the stones to take the bait after Hong Kong?
I'd say around the 50 minute mark where we weren't able to come out of the blocks after half time the gravity of the predicament sunk in.
Terrible 30 minutes, fantastic evening!

Maybe not. But we all lived every moment! A don't know what else was newsworthy during those weeks in NZ, daily updates on McCaw's foot were as big news as anything

I was hoping that when Ellis came on at the 50 minute mark and Hore and Ali too, that we might see the game speed up a bit with some fresh legs because we finished the half and started the second looking a little vulnerable.
It just wasn’t that game and we got 30 minutes of intense laden defensive footy.

Pretty much coz we lived every single moment.
Being a sports fan is a big thing.
In that article that @Duluth quoted I tried to express how we all felt as we are all part of the All Blacks at some level.
And that was THE most emotional I've ever felt in sport, watching, playing, supporting.
No need to belittle that experience.
