Pretty happy with this team selection
D Mac
worked well with Mounga as a dual
Play maker. I think that’s a big reason for his selection. In that last test it was Mo'unga and Havili sharing the playmaking roles and on my view that was far more effective than DMac playing in that role.
In saying that, B. Barrett and DMac used to work well in the 10/15 roles pre-RWC.
DMac’s shining knights are out in force aye! I don’t mind him and his fearlessness is something else, but he stunk the house out last match and that has been a problem the last two seasons.
I am not convinced by him either,I was really thinking back to the Tongan test,
Were D Mac was the other playmaker with Ritchie,
Havilli wasn’t playing .
D Mac well, I am waiting for something brilliant or something completely stupid. -

Not a lot to be unhappy about for me.
Yeah. The cupboard at 6/7/8 look pretty full of talent at the moment. Ironically, that probably makes the decision for those slots quite difficult.

@crucial said in All Blacks vs Wallabies Bledisloe 1 Eden Park 7th Aug:
The counter to that is elusiveness.
His defence is pretty special as well. He was seriously impressive against England in 2018 and his lack of size doesn't appear to be a handicap in that department.
For me, he's too good a player to leave out but the biggest problem is knowing what is his best position. I think I'd have him as No. 1 super-sub and back-up 10 and 15.

Play him against tier-two opponents and he looks a million dollars, play him against big imposing physical sides and he'll get flattened, time and again.
I guess the England team I saw at Twickenham in 2018 were all midgets then....

Absurd situation that many are hoping for a sub-par performance so we can get the best, (almost universally acknowledged), coach in there in time for the next WC.
A strong showing in '21 could be a terrible result for '23. Would it simply paper over the cracks? And come the world cup the failures of the 2017 Lions series, 2019 RWC and 2020 again come to the fore as we lack ideas when the pressure comes on?

Who's many?
Definitely absurd to hope for that because of mythical best coach.

They'll be speeeewinnnggg, maaaaate! Just wait for a Gatland style passive agressive whinge about lack of planning from the ref appointers, coming from Rennie.
Oh no, won't happen, Rennnie has some class.

@kirwan who should be on the wing then?
Ioane at 11, if fit Jordan on the right. With Jordan injured I would try DMac on the wing, he’s pretty creative and could make a difference there. Certainly fast enough and a good finisher.
I’d have BB at 15, then JB if his brother really doesn’t want to play there anymore. But seeing as RI wants to be a 13 and is playing 11, is that really a factor in selection?
Sounds like your issue is more with 15 then? I'd much rather have a proven winger on the wing than a guy who can be pretty mercurial in positions he has actually played before.
Australia aren't Fiji or Tonga.
No, I'm not a fan of Reece either. And I think DMac is too good to be left out, but he's not the best fullback against Tier 1 nations, and could be worth a shot on the wing. He's already a much better defender than Reece.

I looked at some stats a couple of weeks back that showed how effective DMac has been when moving to wing.
My concern for a whole game and plan would be that he plays best when getting involved. When he is at 15 they generally have him as second playmaker and being planned out, he and RM interchange positions. It is a bit harder for that to work from wing and you run the risk of leaving a side of the field open if there is a turnover.
I just get the feeling that the selections are more about combos than 'who is best' (and isn't tat how it should be in a team game?). DMac and RM have worked out a good understanding, Reece reads RM and DH well -

Christ on a bike. Is this a version of clickbait to set up something for the media to talk about?
Williams and Pickerell both together and separately have filled a book full of clangers yet get rewarded with the biggest games of the season.

Until one 15 really stands out he’s in the mix.
That's the issue. There is no stand out.
I think the best fullback in the AB squad is on the bench and his name doesn’t start with Jordie.
But Beaudie is still working his way into some kind of form, but in terms of skill set and ability, he is class at the back.
Could Will Jordan be our future at fullback. Needs to develop and mature his game a bit, but more game time on the wing will definitely help as it did with Bender.
Beauden was absolutely huge in this game last year, the Wallabies came to play and we were on the back foot, then he just broke the game open with some superb counters from the back. Then Clarke got going and it was all over, despite our forwards barely holding their own. I agree he's our best 15.

Was just messaging my cousin, arranging our traditional post test meet up,the last message from him just under a year ago “All good. Beauden Barrett!!! What a difference”

Id for sure start BB at 15. But if my memory serves, he has always looked great coming off the bench too. Just doubtful he will be 15 with the giraffe there. Otherwise team is pretty spot on. Be interesting to see if we have a good game plan I’d love to see something new. I miss the innovation.

So we’ve got a few trial rules
50/22 which I think menas if you kick it from your half and it bounces out inside their 22 you get the throw
A pre tackle binding one, only one person can bind?
Cleanout not allowed to drop weight on jackler or target lower limbs
red card 20 min
golden point
Anything else? -

he was seriously good on that tour, arguably our best player. You could see, even if he didn't make a break, his pace was giving defenders kittens. And i completely changed my opinions of him as a test player on that tour.
but
injury, and form slide put him back. His play this year probably earned his spot. Problem is, that last performance was a shocker, and his limitations were bought to the fore.
The mitigation is i don't think much of the other options at this stage. JB has just as many limitations to his game. BB is an okay FB, but seems to fuck up backline balance because, from the outside, he still wants to be the 10.
I'm not as sold on Jordan as some. And then we are out of fullbacks. The problem with 5 pro teams is our options to bring through and develop talent are limited.

@machpants 6 tackles then the opposition get a turn?
@Kirwan love watching him run, the balance, swerve, wow!
