The complex rules and pressures on the officials are the real issue. Coaches must be tearing their hair out with such high stakes. Not good form from Rassie but I sympathise with where he is coming from and the shoes he fills. Yes you could demonstrate 20 wrong calls against you if you look hard enough at the video in most matches. But it runs both ways. It is just a game after all.....

So I have been thinking more about the video.
I am by my nature sympathetic to Erasmus, because a) I am South African, b) I whinge about refereeing generally and c) I think the calls in this game did in fact influence the course of the game. But I just can't get behind him on this one and the reason is not because it's a bad look to be whinging about refereeing, but because the execution was so incredibly poor.
What appears to have happened in this case is that Berry had pre-match meetings with the teams where he said he'll focus on certain things. The Springboks felt he moved away from the guidance he gave before the game.
During the game the reffing group also made certain calls (which is their job) which the Springboks were unhappy with.
It appears that the Springbok team reached out the reffing group after the game to try and get clarity. Erasmus wanted to have that meeting on Sunday, but the refs only responded Tuesday (I have no idea what the normal process is).
I am speculating that the Tuesday meeting did not go well and that Erasmus made the video in response to that meeting.
My problem with this whole affair is that video is so poorly constructed that it not 100% clear what Erasmus is trying to say.
It would have been far simpler to make a comment in the press that the feedback from the refs and world rugby was unsatisfactory and then to leak the examples to the press.
This has been an incredibly difficult tour for all involved and it has been hard to keep the enthusiasm going with Covid disruptions and empty statuims. The lions and their media have been pretty good on this tour (compared to say 2009 where it was a six weeks of negativity and spite). This whole thing is just embarrassing, too negative at a time that South African rugby really doesn't need it.

The irony is that TMO was good overall, but Berry was poor in H2. Kudos to Lions for making him think he was seeing legal breakdown play.

TMO wasnāt great. No post match sanction for Watson either AFAIKā¦. Nor the other twin BIL player leg lift/head dump in just 2 of 26 potentially penalisable offenses highlighted in the āleakedā video ostensibly addressed to Joel and his reffing overlord panel. And we are without Ox for 2nd match thx to a flanker illegally binding mid scrum and twisting himā¦. And he was looking very goodā¦

Maybe aligned that with nationalities too to take broad swipes after a few beersā¦ BUT they are HUMANā¦. Completely a given that breakdown and offside has been far from āsortedā for likeā¦ummm..forever ā¦.but advantage time granted by refs should be reffed equally. Example highlighted by Rassie was possibly the straw that broke ā¦it was just an inexplicable differenceā¦.
So combined with lack of response from Berry on Sunday, an injured player, 2 more very lucky ones from head dumps and no word of any potentially impending sanction, the lossā¦by Tuesday Rassie says fukkitā¦ The flicking off of the marker cap at the end was calculated Iām sure, after a pretty heartfelt and impassioned ārantā He may have done the game good in my opinion. BIL potential players get the gap every 4 years. Rest 12ā¦This does count. And EVERYBODY needs for there not to be THAT level of error. Especially when surely SOME of it was blatant to AT LEAST ONE of the reffing teamā¦. -

I think this reply to a post about the dour game by an ex-RAF mate encompasses how shit this tour has been, from a rugby perspective, both on and off field. The poster is SA heritage, born in the UK tho. So supports Saracens, and England - but the Boks if it is not England.
Agree Kiwi. The desire not to lose has sapped any joy out of the whole thing! Not convinced Gatland really ever had a "masterplan" for beating the Boks, just game to game......almost feels like a testimonial! The Boks seem to have made a aggression the tactic almost to the point of intent to harm. Overall, all feels a bit sad to me; sad for the players, sad for the fans, sad for the game!
It really has been a utterly crap advert for rugby, with far more innovation off the field than on - of the tests there is more talk about the shit Rassie got up to, and citings/cards or lack of

@mariner4life thanks. If you want to take the Springboks from nowhere to the top as a coach then you need to be innovative to deal with a lot of politics and coaching skills.
I dont agree with the videos or the involvement with the Americans (the ANC Stormers executives rejected them)
So expect the unexpected from Rassie & kie and be thankful for a strong rival.
He hasn't lost against the All Blacks in NZ and will meet up with Foster in a months time.
