Haha no I mean Faletau is an 8, so not a midfielder...

If you’d talking number 8s don’t you mean Picamoles ? What a game he had against the ABs in 2015

I think Lions have messed up not starting with Watson given makeup of the Boks loosies and their weaker starting front row. Can see the game won at the breakdowns in first half. His energy in the close exchanges generates big momentum. Would have had Curry and Lawes on the bench to adapt as required when boks heavy artillery and Elstadt comes out. Else Lions picks spot on. Boks by 7

Another factor to keep in mind is the refereeing - Berry is for me the best of the referees in this series. I really don't like O'Keefe (too random) and know nothing Raynal other than being French which does not instill much confidence.
The way the maul is refereed is going to be very contentious with South Africa either complaining about players being in on the side or the Lions supporters wondering why they are being penalized. The way it is being refereed at the moment is really dogs breakfast and the sooner world rugby sorts it out the better.
And having a bok TMO will help!

Jonker was a Springbok?
Think that he just means a Saffer.
He was a cop before being a bad referee. Bonkers Jonkers.
IIRC corectly it was even a mistake that he became a ref as someone didn't show up so he got handed a whistle. We all suffered for it after that.
If anyone is wondering I don't think that he is any good.

@act-crusader funny you'd say that, I actually think they got the loose-trio wrong. Curry I agree with, but not so much the other two.
I don't see what the Lawes selection brings, for all the talk about his physicality and brawn I have never seen him have great game. I have been massively impressed by Beirne on tour and even in the six nations and if I had to choose between the two players it would even be close.
Conan seems like gimmick selection. Gatland wanted the best athlete he could find but I haven't seen anything so far on tour to suggest that he will be able to impose himself on the Springbok defence. I don't know if Gatland had any better options available to him.
Having said that there is now 1000 per cent chance those two are going tear it up this weekend.
Lawes is there if AWJ breaks early
He'll be warmed up and slip straight into second row.
On comes Beirne at 6
If the Lawes (Beirne), Curry, Conan combo isn't working then on comes Watson either as a direct replacement for Curry or in addition to Curry to pick up the tempo
Second scenario Watson replaces Conan and Curry goes to 8
Geeky question. Does Beirne, when at lock, pack down at TH or LH? Both Itoje and Lawes are hopeless on TH side, as RWC Final showed.
If Beirne also prefers LH then Henderson ought to have been on bench.

Righto... it's been ages, but I thought I'd better check in here again BEFORE the first Boks v BIL's test, just in case the Boks win it to avoid looking too much like a doos...
My very truncated view:
Boks a bit underdone as a collective.
Playing on soft, spongy deck.
At sea level.
No crowds.I'd say that's probably advantage to the Lions for this first test.
I guess one can argue the toss about selections in both teams, missing players etc. but good talent on both sides.
Forecast set to good weather, no rain, very little wind but cold by Saffa standards - circa 7-10 degrees C.
Should allow for good rugby.Thoroughly looking forward to it - just gutted that I can't be in the stadium.

I feel for Jonker as TMO for this test.
He is basically in a no-win situation for every close call.
If it goes against the BIL's / in favour of the Boks, Gatland and his press contingent will be apoplectic.
If he is perceived as over-compensating and ruling against the Boks as a result... well, let's just say it won't be pretty for him locally.
Poor guy can't win. Best he can hope for is nothing gets referred to the TMO. -
