Looking at that replay, looks like Hooper was onside for his reverse in try.

    Mess of bodies, took advantage.

Also while I was critical of Lonergan's lineout throwing, and he doesn't seem big enough to play Test rugby, he's doing good work at ruck time for us and carries low and hard. Good pace.

@kirwan Actually the question is whether Valetini was offside 🙂

By trying to lock out a game from 15-0 up, with 65 minutes to go.

Put it on 2x speed, add some music and a few women in bikinis, and Benny Hill is back!

There's a lesson in effort there for young players, look at the actions of Tupou first and then Tate McDermott. Enormous stuff to force the mistake and be in a position to capitalise on it.

I don't really know what to make of that game, but it was certainly nice to somehow eke out a win in the end.

When we controlled possession I thought we looked pretty good, but as usual we were let down by a handful of brainsnap errors. Soft dropped balls, terrible kicking, defensive misreads.

I'll give them a pass for the first game of the season though. We really should have won by 10+ given our dominance of territory, and the amount of clear-cut chances we totally blew.

@barbarian ruck work still not nearly up to this level. Yes it is game 1, but FFS if you're the nearest 2 guys at EVERY level of rugby one of you cleans and one of you bridges.

I don't get the "what a gamble" part of that tweet. Lock trying to win lineout ball in the attacking zone after the buzzer has sounded is a gamble? That's his fucking job.

If Dupont and Dulin were the last two players to touch the ball instead of those muppets, the Wallabies would've rightly lost.

@nepia he said the gamble part was Tate McDermott the replacement 9 running down the sideline - not the lock.

What part of that is a gamble? France were hardly going to try going the length of the field.

Was McDermott allowed to wave his arm like that? Don’t have an issue with it, just didn’t know it was allowed.

Ah right, I muddled up the names while watching the vid - I thought the giant lock was McDermott and the halfback had some bogan name like Marshall or Cowan. 😉

But, I agree with @antipodean that still, what part of it is a gamble?

@antipodean And it Latu, Arnold, Skelton, Kerevi, JOC etc were in the team we would've fucking steamrolled them.

    Can only play what's there.

My point was the Wallabies required an act of self sabotage from a fifth choice halfback and a fullback from ProD2.

The initial error from the French was to not go for a much further kick for touch after they got the penalty at the end. Far less pressure trying to close out a game in your opposition half than in your own. Dumb play.

Yep, that was an atrocious kick for touch. Worse than most penalty kicks for touch in League, and that's saying something...
