All Blacks coach Ian Foster outlined Retallick's progress since returning from Japan and explained the reasoning for leaving him out this week.
"He's nearly there," Foster said. "I've seen Finlay Christie get smacked out of a ruck and do a somersault and I chuckled and said 'welcome back Brodie' and that was a non-contact session. That means that Brodie is back, doesn't it? He's hungry, he's energetic, he's certainly refreshed, his body is feeling good.

"There is quite a significant adjustment to the intensity side. You've got to remember he's had two weeks in quarantine and then three weeks out of the rugby environment doing his own thing so some of the micro skill sets – the catch pass, the instinctiveness – is coming back so a week in the grandstand won't hurt him."

Good thinking. Will continue God’s work. May be on Rugby Network on Roku.

I originally mentioned this in jest but am now actually wondering if the AB coaches are trying out an innovation from the standard positional play of the backs and loosies.

The setup last night had the two playmaker thing going a lot. Like a Chiefs game even. DMac seemed to be at first receiver almost every time we were past first phase and then tracked play to be the link creator. So much so that I was even wondering at times what RM was doing.
Then we have the centre selection that was running much straighter lines either as handlers or dummies. Not so much 'crash-balling' but keeping the defence tight and honest to leave room outside.
With Bridge playing more like a distributor than a finisher that meant that a strong loose forward runner could go to the outside channel.

When you think about it the traditional roles and abilities are quite blurred now and it can make sense to have many outside options rather than a marked 'winger' .

I may be overthinking this. Just trying to put some logic around what we saw last night. Could also explain the surprise selection of Tupaea. This imagined gameplay is perfect for his style.

@crucial on the coverage after the game someone on Sky spoke about how the wingers were playing one spot in and the loosies were parked on the wing.

@kiwimurph that doesn't really strike me as anything new though? Squire, Fifita, and plenty of others (I can't remember the one who got the most grief) have got grief for it in the past. Read used to do it a fair bit before he got cake.

Wingers are finishers and need to challenge defences. I'd be looking at either Salesi Rayasi or Julian Savea to replace George Bridge in the All Blacks squad before the Rugby Championship.

With Read in his peak it was planned. With some others it was shirking.

@sparky honestly be good for him to be in the environment. Probably won't play but might do him some good. Already seen people complaining about another Tongan poach on social media.

    Would they be wrong?

Taukei'aho was first spotted while he toured New Zealand as captain of Tonga's under-15s team and in 2014 moved to St Paul's Collegiate in Hamilton on an internationals scholarship.
