Jeez, your tugging at some heart strings there. I met him at his sister's place in between the illnesses, he was in remission (I guess that is the correct term) for a while and seemed healthy enough at the time. I had also met him in his playing days and he kind of aloof, almost arrogant, really driven and determined might be fairer (he had a right to be arrogant really) but the second time around he was just a lovely bloke. Humble, kind, happy to talk to anyone. I even asked him if he thought that his attitude during his playing days was a part of his success. His reply was that the softer more rounded person that he had become might have been even better. He attributed that change to Lorraine as well. Obviously a few of us feel that this was for him which pleases me.
I'm pretty sure most of the cricket following ferners know my history with Marty. But just in case, played against him at School boy level just before he got selected for NZ (whacked me all over the park and got me out ) ; gave him a bottle of Champers when he scored his maiden Test Century at the Basin (back when the player lounge was at ground level); kept in touch sporadically but followed his playing career and subsequent pinnacle of writing for cricinfo. So when I heard he was sick, that was a body blow and when he passed, well lets just say I'm still not completely over it.
To me, he was the perfect blend of style, poise, power and clasical technique. Sure he developed the two eyed stance, but his square cut/cover drive and the square drive off the back foot were things of beauty and immense power, Even on a stuffed knee and with a dodgy back, he was just a tier above his teammates and most opposition bowlers, In my mind, I always picture him with a DF bat even though he changed makers after the falling out with JFM.

Here’s a question to ponder.
If Paddles got picked up by Marty McFly and transported into the future at his peak ( when he was in his 30s ) which of our four pacemen would he displace ?
I mean, he’s fucken Paddles, a better batsman than any of them, better bowler too so no way you don’t select him but which one of our four current champions misses out ?Unpopular as it might seem I’m gonna have to pick Boult.
Colin surely... But of the 4, agree it would be one of the openers, so Boult currently since Southee seems to be getting better with age.
Yep:
- Hadlee
- Jamieson
- Southee
- Wagner
- Boult
- Hadlee used to bat 7, Smith 8, Braces 9 in the games that I vaguely remember
- There was always a suspicion that Hadlee could have has a better batting record if he wasn't having to take wickets at an average of 14 so we could win Tests
- Doesn't matter how supposedly "weak" his batting was, with that bowling attack we wouldn't be relying on runs from the tail to win tests
Boult drops out if we need a spinner, but except for in the sub continent, we don't need a spinner with those five.
How would you fit Cairns and/or Vettori into that line up?
Should be noted Carins has a better bowling strike rate then Paddles...We are at that point where its next to impossible to pick an All time 11.
Best to look it as al All time squad of 13 or 15.With Paddles at 7 that means pushing BJ to 6 and a shorter batting order.
Kane, Taylor, Crowe, Andrew Jones, Turner, Latham, Nicholls, Richardson not too mention Bert Sutcliffe, JF Reid and Fleming into 6 spots.
Brendan McCullum wasnt a bad player either...Vettori has scored more test runs @ 8 then anyone else in history not to mention is our 2nd highest wicket taker.
With Southee, Boult and Wagner we are in a position we have never had before. A bowling group thats played on and on and on.
Had a few other excellent bowlers with comparable records, Doull, Nash come to mind. But they only lasted a handful of years.Shane Bond is a weapon we have never had before or since, up to just a few years ago he would be a shoe in for any all time Black cap side, now hes almost forgotten.
We already seem to be penciling in Conway and Jamieson and those guys have only played a handfull of tests..
There you go, I just highlighted the guys who are no chance of making an all time team ( this may of course change in Nicholls case )
As always with Bond it’s a question of if he played enough to warrant selection, Jamieson is nearly halfway there already !!!

I was bouncing my 8 month old son on my knee when that LBW review from Kane was happening...I let out such a roar when ball tracking showed it missing the stumps that the poor little guy got a hell of a fright and burst into tears #parenting
I did something similar to the cat the other day, when Braydon Ennor dropped that ball! He went up the stairs like he'd been shot with hot porridge!
my dog comes over to comfort me when i yell at the TV. She thinks something is wrong so she licks my face after i have gone "that's a fucking free kick ref you maggot!!"
Mine hides behind the couch the minute I put on the rugby.

You and Chris still together? I thought that you had moved to that other Chris. Gayle or something?
I’d go full homo for either of them. What amazing players they were. Imagine seeing them bat together ? Wow…..

I don’t get that view that Hadlee’s batting was weak. I saw him playing for Notts at Taunton once and he scored a ton in pretty much one session. Sure he was a bowling all rounder and his stats with the ball over shadow those with the bat, but context is everything. How often did he find himself trying to dig NZ out of the mire accompanied by some definite rabbits? That has to fuck with your stats.

Yep, from memory he had a double ton for Notts as well. I think if he’d been in a more balanced NZ side, his batting stats would be even better.
I’m aware Jamieson has a much higher batting average so far, but I didn’t hesitate to put Paddles at 7 in the theoretical lineup from what I remember of his batting.

His average at 7 was 32 and was just over 30 for the last 10 years of his career. He's no Colin de Grandhomme, but he could bat a bit...

Any good celebration after party photos available anywhere yet?
Might see some of the after effects of celebrations tonight, in the T20 Blast. Surrey (Kylo) play Middlesex (Mitchell) - I think Jamieson is available for selection. Somerset (Conway) play Hampshire (CdGH) - both available.

Averages back then we’re much lower all round too.
