@mn5 There is a South American somewhere with a sevens world championship medal won with NZ. Uruguayan I think.

The year we had Cullen and Lomu in the same team at the HK Sevens that there was this bizarre rule that you could select one player from a losing quarterfinalist side.
We chose Stephen Brink of South Africa, and there he was sitting on the bench wearing a black jersey.

The Uruguayan's name is Benjamin Bono.

@bones Yeah never been on the Ennor bandwagon myself. Think a few solid domestic seasons is what he needs.

Depending on what they are looking for from the 4th midfielder, he could make it as they know him. So, assuming ALB, Havili, and Roane are locked in, do they want another ‘true’ midfielder (PUJ) or another center 3/4 (Ennor). With Ioane there I’m not sure there is the space for Ennor. I think he competes with Ioane for that spot and right now could use more time at NPC to get some more game time.

I like ennor (not claiming he should be an AB yet), sometimes i wonder if he suffers from being the crusaders, he might stand out a bit more in one of the other teams

I reckon it's the opposite. He's a good player but there is an assumption that if the Crusaders selected him then he must be really good. Plus the fact tat it is easier to shine in a good team.
I don't see him offering anything head and shoulders above others.
He's like ALB when ALB is playing averagely.

If only there were heaps of top quality Fijians playing in a local professional competition they could select. Instead of traversing the globe during a pandemic.

Oh, wait, there are 11 born and bred Fijians already playing Super Rugby TT.

Oh, double wait. They've been central-contracterised.

    .

Although 8 of the 11 are wingers, so couldn't form a good team out of them, still.

@rapido What? If Fiji want to pick them and they haven't been capped elsewhere, they'll play. But the real good ones go to Eu for the moolah

    No, plenty of them won't.
They'll be absolutely schtum on national availability, and no 'nice' NZ journalist would ask them.

To their bosses they'll either genuinely or pretendingly say they maybe wanna want to play for NZ or Aus so that they stay inside the NZ and Aus central contracting system.

So, we complain about NH clubs not releasing players while ignoring that NZ & Aus franchises remove release from the equation before it has had much of a chance to germinate.

Lots of PI players going through the NZ and Aus systems spend 4 or 5 years of the prime of their careers pretending they don't want to play for a PI nation, then do as soon as they leave to Europe, where occasionally their clubs make it difficult for them, and we complain. But, we are a funnel, the Welcome Bay roundabout of PI rugby.

Same discussion from a week or 2 ago, in fact, probably exact same thread.

See, you fluffybunnies don't read my posts .... 🙂

He's already an AB! He was an excellent winger a couple of seasons ago, who could adequately cover centre. Crusaders had an excellent centre and an abundance of pretty good wingers, so they decided to fuck everyone over and moved him to centre, immediately making both him and Goodhue average players. Now they're doing the same to Faingaanuku, it's bizarre.

I'd love to see him on the wing again, but there are so many players ahead of him at centre. He's about on a par with Collins for me.

And Scott (can’t remember surname) ex NZ 7s coach debuted for a team other than NZ in welly, back in the day. No one cared as long as you got a team together!

Sevens tournament rules were pretty cool I thought. If your team had been knocked out, other teams could pick you up as injury replacement.

So they started doing player pools instead, I was on standby one year but no luck. One of my mates played for China in that one I think.

It was only for injuries though wasn't it. And you could pick from a pool of local players if you got shot too. IIRC this was still happening in the earlier years of the 7s circuit.

I'd expect 7 of those 8 wingers are capped wallabies and the other one is Reece. 🙂

A Probables vs Possibles game would be more interesting than a test against a depleted Fijian team.
I'd like to see these lineups :

    Probables :
    J. Barrett - Jordan, ALB, Havili, Fainganu'uku - Mo'unga, Smith - Savea, Papali'i, Ioane - Whitelock, S. Barrett - Laulala, Taylor, Tuinukuafe.
Sub : B. Barrett, R. Ioane, Weber, Jacobson, Tuipolutu, Tu'ungafasi, Hogdman, Coles.

    Possibles :
Sullivan - Reece, PUJ, Gregory, Rayasi - MacKenzie, Drummond - Sotutu, Blackadder, Robinson - PPP, Vaa'i - Lomax, Aumua, Ross.
Sub : M. Hunt, Ennor, Hall, Frizell, Retallick, Mafileo, Williams, Taukei'aho.

Blackadder was outstanding on the openside vs the Reds, that is why I set him there.
Retallick on the bench for the Possibles as he has been overseas for two years now.

i'd still love to see more of a school yard selection deal, make a bit of a spectacle about it, two coaches named and they have to select one at a time

No way does BBBR get relegated to reserves for Possibles. That is outrageous!

And if I follow your logic for BBBR then why is BB on the main bench? He should swap with DMac.

Red card thug merchants can sit on the bench for the possibles. As in it's "possible" he may get some game time. BBBR has been playing in Japan, so who knows what level he's at.

Beaudy is goldenballs, so he's always good to go.
