I am a big fan of the Stan commentators.

You have to remember we're coming from the Fox team, who gave up trying about a decade ago. Claaaarrrkie, Kearns, George Gregan, Kafer, all just phoning it in with no research, no excitement for the game, just the same old shit every year.

Now we've got excitement! Research! Players names pronounced correctly! A different accent in the box! Analysis! It's just head and shoulders above what it used to be, so I'll defend it to the death.

@barbarian The main Aust Stan commentators are fine, but some of the colour commentators (read: ex-players) are as bad as ours. Harrison seemed to think we were back in the 1990s by saying Waikato Chiefs all the time. I can just imagine the reactions from the CM and BOP TSFers when he continually said that. 🙂

Maybe if Hamilton City Council* could convince them to change it to Waikato Chefs, there could be some gourmet tourism dollars in it...

*if their slogan is "New Zealand’s most beautiful large city, not without effort" (https://ourhamilton.co.nz/culture-events/new-zealands-most-beautiful-large-city-not-without-effort/) then perhaps they could use the marketing tips. I charge very reasonably.

Joe Wheeler is preferable to SBW

Not for me. I don't really see what Wheerer adds, at least SBW tries.

So does James Blackwell. Still doesn’t make him any good.

Saw Christian Cullen during the Crusaders game. Is he suffering any health problems? He looked terrible. Hope he’s ok.

Cullen has always looked half asleep whenever he’s not on a Rugby field, I wouldn’t worry too much about him he’ll be ok.

I don’t know. He looks 45 going on 60. My dad was shocked when I told him how young he is. He thought he was well into his 50s. I’d still go gay for him though. One of the great things about Stan is their Super rugby catalogue. Every game back to 96. It’s terrific watching some of those old games. Some absolute classics.

I was laughing because along with the Waikato part he correctly identified the likelihood of hillbillies with chainsaws and cowbells. Only thing he missed out was fountains. And syphilis.

I was having a chuckle last night at the Aussie comms guys all sounding like they had been sent on a course to pronounce PI names properly. All these years of not giving a shit and it looks like their employers have forced their hand.

First time I have ever heard of Matt Tow-oh-moo-ah.

    About time they tried though

Can't remember which game it was, but listening to TJ this weekend made me realise he's actually a pretty damn good commentator. Plenty of colour in his commentary with just the right amount of detail.

Seems to work well with his comments oppo as well.

Maybe it just seems that way compared to Nisbo

Otherwise I like the Aussies in the comms box. They add an extra level of faux excitement and I enjoy it.

That style of 'faux excitement' is a reason I could never get into watching league.

It just comes across as false. They don't need to be deadpan (a certain level of excitement sometimes wakes you up) but when they start spouting rubbish like praising Julian Savea as if he is the second coming of Lomu when he jogs in an overlap try it's just taking the piss.

I wonder if there's money in offering viewers, ground sounds but no commentary?
5 bucks a month? Perhaps a very small advert logo in the top left to counter act the spoken ads that the doofuss'es mention?

@siam Sky NZ used to offer this option (refs mic, so on-field audio plus crowd noise) but that wasn't available when I last checked.

I used it on most Blues/Auckland games because of TJ's bullshit. The extra audio option is usually taken by the terrible alternative commentary now.

@duluth Yeah, I have previously referred to the yellow button on the Sky remote as the TJ-proof option. I quite enjoyed this audio feed although maybe Sky have removed it because you had unfiltered comments from players and someone complained about the language.

Maybe. Or I was comparing him to the Oz commentators. My gold standard is the BBC's Andrew Cotter and I think Rikki Swannell gets the closest to that level.

Maloney has slowed down his pace of speech which makes for rather odd viewing.

Mehrst was great though, didn't notice SBW as you can't pick up everything in the 5 min youtube videos ...

Well I wouldn't mind getting old Roy and HG over to do some rugby commentary

3 minutes in on the French...not hard to move that back to the commentary box..

Roy and HG are abysmal. Hard pass.
