Old Boys v Marist at FMG Hamilton was a tight affair with 5 super players on display. 29-27 to OB. Club rugby is still entertaining

@bones Had a beer in the Axemen's Isherwood Lounge with the venerable Mr. Quinn last night after the Axemen narrowly failed to defeat Wainuiomata. Paying the penalty for not attempting two very kickable penalties in the last 15 minutes and losing 14 - 16. Vaea Fifita donned the WFC jersey for the first time since 2016 playing the full eighty minutes and was Mt. Everest heights above everyone else on the field in terms of prety much everything worthwhile measurable. Even managed to make a couple of effective tackles but did miss one when a huge guy Wainui had playing on the wing managed to avoid his covering corner-flagging attempt to shove him into touch Incidentally his last three appearances for the Axemen have all been against Wainui, one being a seven point win and the other two being one and two point losses.

Kept buying beers to shout Mikey07 in case he turned up, but if he did he was incognito. Still the beers were certainly not wasted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Southern got beaten 50-28 yesterday, away to Inglewood. Certainly suffering from injuries ,only 3rd game and we had 9 first choice players out with injury and unable to be considered for game.

@dan54 I just read this article. Didn't you know Inglewood had a former All Black on the bench?

    Masoe back in maroon

Bugger me star, I was at game, was looking at Masoe's picture in clubrooms (alongside Trapper Loveridge) but didn't take any notice of their bench, or actually grab a programme!😖

Boys are playing Spotswood tomorrow up in New Plymouth , so may just go and have a peek at either country club near me here or just wander to Stratford I thinking.

went along to watch Kamo host Kerikeri today, with Kamo sitting undefeated in 2nd and KK in 5th.

In perfect conditions, with 10 go, Kamo were trailing 12-29 and deservedly so, KK put on 15 points while Kamo's centre was in the bin for a no arms tackle.

But the final 10 saw Kamo finally playing with some urgency and disipline and take the chocolates 31-29 with the conversion from just outside the uprights on the full time hooter.

While down by 12, Kamo looked to have scored to get within striking distance, but despite a professional foul by a KK player over the line, the ref awarded a defensive scrum to KK.

MOments later a long range counter saw Kamo benefit from a forward pass right in front of the ref and Blake hohaia aran 25m to score. They then took a quick droppie that barely snuck inside the right upright, but as ref wasn't quite ready, neither tj behind, they weren't able to confirm it went over and didn't award it.

Kamo were camped on the line winning penalty after penalty for the last few minutes, and just as it seemed they would fall short, they snaffled it at the death.

KK were the better team for 70 mins, with Kamo's ill disipline and impatience costing them.

No real standouts for either team, but Blake Hohaia did show some class in the final 10, Nikau GRaham looks great running the ball from 10, but gee his kicking can be shit too. Grayson Thyne was busy as always at 8. THe KAmo back 3 were heavily involved in the last 10 and made you wonder if they had played the first 70.

The Kamo scrum had the edge for the game, and some well timed subs certainly added something in the final quarter too

Tamati Tua was running the water today, looks in a good shape, if not a bit lean, Luke Jacobson was still on the sidelines too, seemed to be calling some of the shots in regards to subbing.

For KK they have some strong ball runners, without a team sheet I cant name any of them, but thier lock was a big unit that took some stopping with ball in hand, similarly a couple of thier front rowers.

Thier 10 and 12 looked more like props, but had some good pace and were light on thier feet.

Right now OBM and Kamo are undefeated and leading the way but MN and Western Sharks both within striking distance, while last years winners, Waipu sit 7th on the table

Went to cotes v Massey at Harvey Wright today. Pretty disjointed and even first half but Cotes showed their strength and pulled away in second half. Massey don’t look too bad despite their results to date. Expecting them to move up the table once they get a chance to play some of the easier teams.

By all accounts, Shore have picked up some new signings this year who have fit in well and they are looking stronger than last year where they didn’t miss out by much.

Looks a good tight completion ahead

Well Southern had a draw 22 all with Spotswood.
Boys were playing in New Plymouth, and was a bit busy, so I went instead over to Kaponga, just to watch some real country rugby. Really enjoyed it, the rugby was not of a great standard, and Kaponga got thrashed, probably close to 100-7 or something, but was good to see the attitudes of players etc. Kaponga's population is about 315 or something, so there not a huge amount of players, especially when they also have a soccer club that was playing next field. They were getting knocked around and had a few injuries, but no worries, none of the non contesting scrum shit or anything, just someone else moved into front row, and after they ran out of players, they had about 4 reserves, one of the opposition team (Normanby ) just grabbed a jersey and went back on for them. Went into clubrooms for a beer after, and the team and coach weren't gutted with the hiding, they won last week and coach was happy with what they had to do to fix things. Captains speech was gold mentiong to Normanby boys geez some of those tackle f***en felt hard, but c'mon boys stop pissing around and get to training ! Would suggest all try and get to these 'village' games, as I said in a place of 312 or so people they still had a good rowdy crowd of 40-50 people, and bloody great clubrooms etc!

i have thought for a while that some of the elite players that are put to clubs and will never play for that club should be put into the smaller clubs and told to go along once or twice a year to get a feel for grassroot rugby.

@ploughboy In 2019, Brodie Retallick played for his club Central Hawke's Bay (for the first time in 9 years). Just about half the region was there and his team mates were stoked to have him. An experience they will never forget, and he said it was awesome, too!
