On one hand you can make a pretty compelling point that they shouldn't have aired it but by Christ if every Mum/Dad/Brother/Sister/Grandparent/Aunt/Uncle of any remotely famous sportsperson decided to ring up the Radio and express their moral outrage at someone bagging their pride and joy then the interweb would have a meltdown.

I have a feeling Ben has been on the blower to Mum having an almighty rant at her calling in the first place, he's a grown up, not a fucken kid.

Matt Heath freely admitted he was a very good player, imagine if Mrs Donald decided to ring talkback after Stephens efforts in Hong Kong ?

Call me old-fashioned, but regardless of what you think of the actual content of her call or her reasons for ringing, if they gave her their word that she would not be on-air, it is poor form to basically lie outright and play it on-air. Ethical journalism and all that. I hate the way journalists feel they are a law unto themselves. Like when Mike Hosking got his knickers in a twist when the media started looking into his kids.

Matt Heath and Jeremy Wells are not journalists. They're broadcasters. There's a difference.

There are many journalists that are no-one's idea of a journalist either!

But broadcasters or journalists they have a duty not to lie and certainly not to lie so blatantly to an interviewee.

I completely agree with the sentiment that if they told her it wasn't on air then it shouldn't have got to air. But I also don't have heaps of sympathy.

But she must have known she was skating on thin ice when she decided she might call them up and give them a piece of her mind in regards to what they'd said about her poor darling professional sportsman son.

Two separate threads to this really:-

1. Is she a stupid, whining bitch? Yes.

2. Are the broadcasters within their rights to lie about her rant being on air? No.

Difficult to see who comes out best here.

Do you expect a mum to rabidly (often foolishly) defend her kid regardless of his age oe what he's done? Hell yes.

Do you expect broadcasters to understand theres a line between a good bit of banter & lying to intentionally humiliate someone in the search for ratings & fame?

Actually probably not. But its not like they suddenly became assholes who had no thought for what they were doing, its always been there... so she was dumb to call them, but its what mums do, and she did stress to them she didn't want to be on air.

Generally, yes. But I think an exception is made when they're a professional sportsman or people who get paid well because they're in the public eye. Everyone who has ever heard a talkback radio show would know that if a sportsman underperforms, they will be bagged by every man and his dog, because they haven't done well at what they're paid to do. Fair to say my job gets bagged publicly when people do it poorly.

The phone lines would be clogged if family members of every sportsman who got bagged in the media decided to call up and tell the hosts what they thought of them.

It's an occupational hazard for sportsmen and sportswomen. They know what they're getting themselves in for when they sign up for the big pay packets and endorsement deals. Otherwise they'd be throwing the ball around some regional sportsground in the weekend and working full time during the week for much less money.

The only reason I could see it rational for a mother of a sportsman to ring up and defend her son would be if the criticism was well out of line or overly personal. Otherwise, I'd expect they she take it on the chin and realise that her son bowled the worst over at the death since this...

IF you want to complain, I'm assuming ringing 0800 Hauraki (Sudio ON Air Line) isn't the number you should be calling!
