All I'll say is between Stokes Mum and the ridiculous Gypsygate that occurred on the other thread I'm really worried about expressing my opinion about any sportspeople on here in case I get fined/sued.

I think Jimmy Franklin should have been heaps better than he actually was. I think he focused a bit on the batting so the bowling suffered in later years if memory serves.
-

Jimmy had two test careers.

His first career he was quite a lively quick bower who could bat a bit. His stats show up to 2006 he took 76 wickets at 28 and had a batting average of 22, mainly batting at 8 and 9.

Then he got injured.

Post injury he'd lost his pace and was military medium and was ineffective as anything other than a stock bowler in tests. Our team was a bit shit, so we tried to convert him into a number 6 batsman who could bowl, but he wasn't really up to it as his post-2007 averages of 19 with the bat and 107 with the ball show.

He was quite a bit more useful as an ODI player post-2007 in a sort of Grant Elliott/Chris Harris role.
-

On one hand you can make a pretty compelling point that they shouldn't have aired it but by Christ if every Mum/Dad/Brother/Sister/Grandparent/Aunt/Uncle of any remotely famous sportsperson decided to ring up the Radio and express their moral outrage at someone bagging their pride and joy then the interweb would have a meltdown.

I have a feeling Ben has been on the blower to Mum having an almighty rant at her calling in the first place, he's a grown up, not a fucken kid.
-

Matt Heath freely admitted he was a very good player, imagine if Mrs Donald decided to ring talkback after Stephens efforts in Hong Kong ?
-

I bet she was that Mum who turned up and bailed up a teacher if her boy got a bad report card at school as well.
-

I thought the issue was not so much what was said but they lied to her about not being on air?

Come on mate, this is the Fern, don't let the facts ruin us taking the mickey out of a ginger Pommie sportsman.
-

Call me old-fashioned, but regardless of what you think of the actual content of her call or her reasons for ringing, if they gave her their word that she would not be on-air, it is poor form to basically lie outright and play it on-air. Ethical journalism and all that. I hate the way journalists feel they are a law unto themselves. Like when Mike Hosking got his knickers in a twist when the media started looking into his kids.

-

Matt Heath and Jeremy Wells are not journalists. They're broadcasters. There's a difference.

Agreed. But they're still not journalists.
-
There are many journalists that are no-one's idea of a journalist either!

But broadcasters or journalists they have a duty not to lie and certainly not to lie so blatantly to an interviewee.
-

I think it is a dick move to lie to someone so yo can humiliate them for ratings.

But those 'broadcasters' have been assholes for a long time and seem to think they are cool and edgy.
-

I completely agree with the sentiment that if they told her it wasn't on air then it shouldn't have got to air. But I also don't have heaps of sympathy.

But she must have known she was skating on thin ice when she decided she might call them up and give them a piece of her mind in regards to what they'd said about her poor darling professional sportsman son.
-

Two separate threads to this really:-

1. Is she a stupid, whining bitch? Yes.

2. Are the broadcasters within their rights to lie about her rant being on air? No.

Difficult to see who comes out best here.
