Dunedin RFC celebrating our 150th anniversary, NZ's second oldest club i believe, started the season with the loss though
You might be being a bit optimistic there with the second oldest rugby club claims. The Nelson Club was formed in 1868 and adopted the rules of rugby in 1870. The Wellington Football Club is the second oldest rugby club having been formed in 1870 but holds the distinction in being the oldest continuous club (Nelson fielding combined teams with another club - possibly Rival? during war time counts them out).

The Christchurch Football Club is NZ oldest but did not adopt the rules of rugby until after their Nelson and Wellington equivalents thus do not enter into calculations re "Oldest" claims! -
@higgins obviously cant prove it, happy to add "arguably", it just what we were always told and 1871 is right in the ball park
found this "The Club was formed in 1871 and is the longest consecutive running rugby club in the country." dont know if that plays into it

@kiwiwomble There is a lot of feeling about these sort of things but my claims of Nelson being the oldest and Wellington the oldest continuous club cannot be disputed. Dunedin might have claims as the second oldest continuous club ie fielding teams in the club's own name (and not combined with another club) every season since 1871 but the Wellington Axemen have done so since 1870.

@higgins apologies, there obviously is a lot of feelings, was really just kind of proud my old club has made it to 150 years

you say that and Dunedin say otherwise

@kiwiwomble All good, I spent a year with the Blues (Nelson) as a supporter in the late 80s and have been up at the Axemen since I came to Wellington in the late 1990s. It has not been an easy road for them in that time but they battle away as probably the 4th ranked Club in a very small area with Wellington, MSP and Poneke being only about five hundred metres apart and Ories about another kilometre away.

and atu moli on bench for varsityGood spotting. I noted that his brother is now playing for Varsity not Hautapu, as a no.8.

@kiwiwomble Not quite correct. Wellington has always fielded a First XV but sometimes they have not been in the top grade of rugby. At one stage the Premier Division in Wellington was restricted to ten teams so some clubs obviously missed out. Dunedin's grasp at the title seems to ignore that a club is more than it's top side.

went along to watch Old Boys Marist hosting Wellsford, with the home side one of 2 undefeated sides so far.
Conditions perfect underfoot, warm but a stiff breeze but was more across than end to end
With Wellsfords injury toll and the side OBM were putting out, this was always going to go to the home side.
About 20 mins in, Wellsford lost a prop, and it was golden oldies from there, and at the break it was 12-12, with Ranger featuring heavily in Wellsford game.
BUt after the break, Wellsford couldnt get the ball and OBM ran away with it, taking the chocolates at 43-17, although Wellsford did have the final say with a lovely try on FT, although I expect if it wasnt golden oldies the score coulda been bigger.
For OBM, big Uluilakepa was a real handful with ball in hand, and often popped up with a big hit, but jeez he is unfit! Was about 10 mins into 2nd spell at a restart he was set up by us and and grinning he was like 'I need a rest' and then he started singing!
Isi Manu at 8 was also very punishing, scored 3 tries I think in the end, great acceleration.
Jared Byrne looked good on the side of the scrum for OBM and out in a huge hit on Ranger in full flight, Rayasi had a nice little cameo in the final 20 including a couple of big runs, one about 60m to score a try that still needed some work, he is a big lad!
For Wellsford, Ranger had a very good first spell, some lovely short and long passes, 1 resulted in a super 60m try that went through several hands including a prop taking the pass form Ranger and tip toeing down the side line before drawing and passing to the centre, Jevahn (dont know his last name) who ended up scoring, and this kid looked bloody good too, always dangerous when he got the ball.
Paddy-Joe Atkins looked tidy around the park, put in some big hits too. The Wellsford 8 got through some work too.
In the end, Wellsford just didnt have the power to keep up with OBM.
Was a messy opening 20, but the 20-60 mins was some bloody good footy, the last 20 OBM should put a few more tries in but I think a bit of white line fever struck a few lads.
Ranger did cop a YC for work on the ground when OBM were in a position to score at about 50 mins, but he was as influential for his team as you would expect him to be.
BUt I gotta say, neither side had anyone of height, and Kamo/Waipu last week didnt really either, so tall locks is a massive issue as far as I can see.
Rayasi gets the ball below and scores

@bones Had a beer in the Axemen's Isherwood Lounge with the venerable Mr. Quinn last night after the Axemen narrowly failed to defeat Wainuiomata. Paying the penalty for not attempting two very kickable penalties in the last 15 minutes and losing 14 - 16. Vaea Fifita donned the WFC jersey for the first time since 2016 playing the full eighty minutes and was Mt. Everest heights above everyone else on the field in terms of prety much everything worthwhile measurable. Even managed to make a couple of effective tackles but did miss one when a huge guy Wainui had playing on the wing managed to avoid his covering corner-flagging attempt to shove him into touch Incidentally his last three appearances for the Axemen have all been against Wainui, one being a seven point win and the other two being one and two point losses.
