I used to think he was amusing, some of the stuff when he was playing was fine, but then the stuff with Fumi went too far (I'd argue some of that was more offensive than his poor attempt at the accent) and since then I think he just tries too hard.
Yeah that was some seriously creepy shit.
Was he in a pair of nappies or something ?
Again, creepy and fucked up but I’d imagine the Japanese halfback didn’t have a gun pointed at his head to partake in the “comedy”

It's a tough gig trying to be the rugby funny man.
It's a tough gig trying to be a funny man full-stop and there's not many who have really broad appeal.
I suspect Wheeler's target audience is a fair bit younger than the average ferner.
But, thinking back, Glen Osborne is probably the only guy who has made a genuine success of the role.
I remember Stu Wilson was regarded as the hardest of cases in the AB environment, but he died miserably on national TV.

Marc Ellis ( genuinely funny guy ) and Matthew Ridge ( absolute cock ) were a good pairing for awhile.

No, I think you should assume, based exclusively on his skin colour, that he had no agency or ability to think independently. Lucky he has so many people to remind him of that on his behalf. Pretty sure there’s a word for that.
Another thing that’s funny, is people claiming to speak on behalf of society when they themselves usually only represent the views of a tiny fraction of society.

@mn5 True!
Ellis was very funny in his day.
There was a Southland guy, Jeremy someone (Winter?) who tried to market himself as "The Chosen One" who was another who fell flat as a turd.
Winders. His shtick was the Southland accent and singing about Y-fronts.
-
@mn5 yeah was a bit where he was like Wheelers 'pet' plus there was a song Wheeler did when Fumi left the HIghlanders, bit of a man crush type song (was actually in an article on Stuff on weekend if you were wanting to hear it)

@chris-b the nut.
Just awful.
Who me?
Certainly, not many appreciated my Ta$man schtick. I think @Snowy was one who realized it was a pisstake!
More seriously, who was the nut? Winders?

It’s what Stu Wilson referred to the ball as.
-
@majorrage Ah! Of course he did!
Poor old Stu. He probably was funny in a small group - but, it just didn't translate.
He probably was a decent bloke. Read this recently.
-
@chris-b I went to a dinner when Stu Wilson spoke, he was excellent, including humour (even if I didnt find him funny on TV)
Probably much easier to tailor your humour to a specific group (at a dinner event) than 10s of thousands of viewers/listeners

@taniwharugby Eric Rush is an absolute genius in front of an Australian rugby-loving crowd. I've seen him twice, totally different material, audience in stiches both times.
Did he ever make it onto TV back home?

which was actually funny as fuck, and I'm sure a part of the reason Sky hired him.. yet it's based on exactly the same humour they're now saying is not up to their standards...

It was about as funny as Leigh Hart.
I would say 'less funny' but if that was the case I would have said 'as funny as Ursula the fat Saffa' -
