Black Caps v Bangladesh 2021

I don't think we should be too smug about the Bangladeshi cricket team. They've only had test status for 21 years. If you compare their test record after 21 years to ours after 21 years they are infinitely superior.
I use the word "infinitely" literally. It took us another 5 years to even win a single test. It is therefore impossible to quantify how superior their record is to ours at a similar point in our history.
We didn't get teams like Ireland, Zimbabwe or Afghanistan to pick up wins against though did we....

@donsteppa cricinfo stats are down but I had the same thought.
NZ didn't play all that much and WWII intervened. Our first victory was in our 45th Test against Windies.
Of those 45 21 were against the Poms, 1 against Oz, p SA, 6 WI, 3 Pak, 5 India. All the games against the two South Asian sides were played away.
Bangles won their first test at the 35th attempt at home against Zimbabwe. They didn't win again until their 60th Test against a very poor Windies side
What does this mean. Bugger all except you can't compare records acrodss different eras.

Looks like they are a sleeping giant. I remember up until recently India always had a reputation for not being able to win abroad
sleeping giant is a bit brave - but they sure as hell be doing better than they are right now.

Taking the field with Conway wicket keeping is not a good strategy. He's not got the technique or finesse. I was sure that Phillips kept for a couple of CPL seasons - not sure why he doesn't do it because Conway looked like a real part timer.
Think the rain will scupper my commentators curse though.
Bangles putting in their usual pea hearted performance. I know the limitations of the Italy of world cricket but for decades I've watched these guys phone it in in NZ. Then they're a different team at home. I think they only try when they've got local fans to answer directly to. Tours are for bank, home is for avoiding effigies.

To paraphrase Jeff Thomson ( I think ) the BCs could turn up pissed and beat these guys. Complete waste of time
These messages have a real opportunity to age very bad ...
Ya reckon? How is anything the bangles do today going to atone for 20 years of half arsedness in NZ?
Mental note. Don't ever joke about posts writing off the opposition in the cricket thread.
🙂 just pick a decent opponent 👍 (and use emojis, I can't see your smile beneath the covid mask 😄)

The start Bangladesh made in international cricket was to be expected. My sense of them is that they went on to plateau at the sort of times when Sri Lanka made the next step up in their new-to-international-cricket journey.
Wins against Aus, Eng, Zim, Windies and SL. They've got 160 million people - competent administrators should be able to get a stream of talent. Their U19 side just won the 2020 tournament; overall, they should get better and get better soon.
This team just doens't look like it wants to be here unfortunately. The fielding has not been at international level, and that isn't determined by the grounds they are playing on
This is my point. The vagaries of their skill levels isn't the issue, it's the effort and attitudes to the team aspect that differs so much home and away. Since noticing them fucking around in the field about 10 years ago I started watching that aspect of their game. Very little improvement there. Actually I've played with and against a fair few of their players from that time and they're awesome. Really little but really skilful. They've had a lot of ICC resources given to them but the stand out feature of their play in NZ is lackadaisical, giggling at blunders and long periods of club level catching and fielding. So be it, up to them but there's no free pass because other teams were once not very good.
I do sympathise with the players as the admins often display power hungry antics and regularly publicly throw players under buses, so to speak. Actually having met some of the fish heads and stories from Dhaka, perhaps the team is mostly a play thing for the elite administrators.
The on field performances in NZ , rest solely on the players, (not on other country's historical records) and too often they appear to be just going through the motions.
I want them to get better, as do their Bangladeshi fans.

IIRC Phillips' knee problems means he can't be a regular WK.
I think they also wanted him to bowl.
3 overs 1/20 @ 6.67 would say that he is more than handy and they had it right. -

Well yeah NZ were extremely poor for ages, when John Reid died he was painted as some kind of world class all rounder when all he was in all honesty was the best player in a shite side.
It’s funny the WIndies are mentioned. Historically they’ve had a shitload more cricketing legends than we’ve had, but compare the two test teams now ?

Yeah I did, but he got away with them and the end result was pretty good. Statistics and damn lies I guess.

Anyone in Auckland think there is any likelihood of play today?

I'm astonished but delighted to see us get underway.

Finn Allen on fire. Black Caps smoking it around Eden Park.

Seems you must refer to the BC's new opening bat as F'Nallin

Our biggest problem is our population size. There's just not as much money to be made in TV rights when we are playing, do we often just get minnows. I'd say us making the championship test final was a bit of a disaster for a lot of broadcasters.
-
@no-quarter It seems to be either Sri Lanka, Pakistan or Bangladesh...COVID aside SA haven’t been here since 2017.

Broadcasters would have loved England v India at Lord's.
