Taking the field with Conway wicket keeping is not a good strategy. He's not got the technique or finesse. I was sure that Phillips kept for a couple of CPL seasons - not sure why he doesn't do it because Conway looked like a real part timer.
Think the rain will scupper my commentators curse though.
Bangles putting in their usual pea hearted performance. I know the limitations of the Italy of world cricket but for decades I've watched these guys phone it in in NZ. Then they're a different team at home. I think they only try when they've got local fans to answer directly to. Tours are for bank, home is for avoiding effigies.

To paraphrase Jeff Thomson ( I think ) the BCs could turn up pissed and beat these guys. Complete waste of time
These messages have a real opportunity to age very bad ...
Doubtful

IIRC Phillips' knee problems means he can't be a regular WK.

@donsteppa I think the Bangers just threw their toys out of the cot when the saw what they had to chase.
Fair enough too. Dunno how they work these things out, but that seems about 10 runs too high to me.

Ya reckon? How is anything the bangles do today going to atone for 20 years of half arsedness in NZ?

Mental note. Don't ever joke about posts writing off the opposition in the cricket thread.

I don't think we should be too smug about the Bangladeshi cricket team. They've only had test status for 21 years. If you compare their test record after 21 years to ours after 21 years they are infinitely superior.
I use the word "infinitely" literally. It took us another 5 years to even win a single test. It is therefore impossible to quantify how superior their record is to ours at a similar point in our history.

It would require me to do some actual research on Cricinfo, but maybe a better comparison is the number of games played? Even in the 80's my memory is of 3 home tests a year, and 4 ODI's max, and perhaps the same away depending on the year. We also had more limited and stronger opposition, uncovered pitches in those earlier days, etc.
The start Bangladesh made in international cricket was to be expected. My sense of them is that they went on to plateau at the sort of times when Sri Lanka made the next step up in their new-to-international-cricket journey.

If the interweb was around in the early days I’m sure English and Australian fans would have ripped the shit out of NZ for being shite.
I think it’s our right at the moment to put the boot in. If Bangladesh get there down the line then they can too.
They do have one class all rounder and a bunch of decentish players, certainly not a lost cause by any stretch. Al Hasan is a better player than our all rounder John Reid was as one example.
But despite all that I find their constant tours here very predictable and boring.
-
@mn5 I don't know what the stats are, but the Bangles seem to tour here a lot. I think our days as a place for emerging nations to come should have reduced for the moment, we are good enough right now to see all the big boys on a more regular basis based on merit
-
It must be immediacy bias, here is the list of nations that have toured Aotearoa
The one that sticks out as not coming often is SA

Wins against Aus, Eng, Zim, Windies and SL. They've got 160 million people - competent administrators should be able to get a stream of talent. Their U19 side just won the 2020 tournament; overall, they should get better and get better soon.
This team just doens't look like it wants to be here unfortunately. The fielding has not been at international level, and that isn't determined by the grounds they are playing on

Looks like they are a sleeping giant. I remember up until recently India always had a reputation for not being able to win abroad

Sri Lanka were 14 years between their first Test match (February 1982) and winning their first Cricket World Cup in 1996. By comparison, Bangladesh are overdue to convert their potential.
(In our defence in CWC's, at least we're no South Africa... )
