And to all the All Whites haters you are ignoring the obvious fact that draws are far more common in Soccer than any other sport. To go to a World Cup and not drop a game was absolutely phenomenal. I'm still pissed at the cheating Italians, we should have beaten them 1-0 but for their acting.
It was obviously monumental for the AWs to get to the Cup and you can only play what’s in front of you, but I just consider their qualification draw something of a joke. New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu then Bahrain. Now if they’d had to beat a European or South American side to get in that would be a different story

Here is the race. The last 500 m are great to watch but it depends on your subjective definition of "moment".
That was pretty damn cool, but up there with the ABs in 2011? Nowhere near. Particularly when you consider the stress of the semi-final as well and Carter‘s injury, Donald’s redemption story.
Carter's injury
McCaw's injury
Cruden's injury
Piri's injury pre-final...
Slade's injuryDamn, that shit needs a film
Add in that pretty much no NZ sportsman ever suffered a torn adductor - before or since. And for this brief period, we had at least three of them....
Then people went back to having bog standard groin strains.

And Beaver running on stinking of whitebait and doing his best Rudy impression with a Jersey two sizes too small, and winning the game for us

Also, Cruden skateboarding around Palmy ... with the weather in that place you have a survival against nature story while skating as well.

Don't forget that Italy were the defending world champs. I forget who the competition for team of the year was, but I have no problem with them being finalists and they have a fair argument for overall winner
The halbergs always spark up debate about the relative merits of sports and I've always enjoyed it. I wish we'd celebrate the finalists a bit more rather than fixating an the winners. Even in years with an obvious winner, all of the candidates have achieved amazing things and trying to rask them is a bit like asking whether Brodie Rettalick or Colin Meads would have started at lock if they'd been on the originals tour.
No complaint about the moment of the decade here as sporting spectacles Elliot's 6 and the double sculls finish stand out for me, but ultimately than award is about how an individual reacted to each moment and is going to be personal. It's well suited to a vote to see which moment resonated with the most people.

To go on about their achievements is celebrating “participating” a bit too much for my liking.

Halbergs are a crock of shît imo. PC Sports Awards with no credibility. It all started going off the rails when the supreme award went to silver medalists. Silver means second.

You're a damn tough marker. It's the toughest sports tournament in the world - to (a) get there, and (b) not lose is a significatn achievement. We'll take it.
By comparison rowing has such a small player base that it has teh highest medal rate per participant I understand.
... and now yuo made me defend Soccer. On a sports forum. When it bores me to tears. FFS.

It's always been an 'olympics' focussed event. Ah well, such is life. Can't give it to teh ABs every year I suppose (particularly not the last 5)

Soccer is a different beast and they certainly did themselves proud at the cup and it was great to watch, but yeah it does seem a little weird to celebrate not losing but still going out in the first round. Maybe a bit like making the final of the Olympic 100m sprint and not coming last?

i reckon if a kiwi did that they would be in contention, and rightly so

I don’t disagree with any of that but the pedant in me points to the fact that they didn’t win or progress.
I guess it’s like AB fans looking at Rugby minnows celebrating just making the cup......and obviously the All Whites had nothing but draws in a sport that has a lot of draws. Some of them ( Rugby teams ) had cricket scores against them.....
Fucken good effort by the AWs but worthy a big award ? Na.

It is certainly an achievement, but it's also a game where it's much easier to not lose than it is to win.
Rowing, as anyone who did it at school knows, is fucking hard. And winning is an amazing accomplishment unless your competitors give up...

oh, not saying it's not hard! I row on an erg, and goddamn that shit it tough.
That said, check out this
- Soccer. More than 200 countries trying to qualify for the cup. 5 of the top 10 most well attended leagues. More money than yuo can shake a stick at.
and then, down in 53rd, behind curling and ahead of kabbadi is rowing.
We are good at rowing, but it's a very small sport, with an over-representation of medals. What other traditional team sport (where you all do the same thing) can you be 15th best in your country and come home with a gold medal?
I am absolutely not denigrating the achievements, as they are amazing. But the pool of competitors is so much smaller. Hell, Bond and Murray were so good other competitors jumped into different boats to avoid them.
So, yes we should celebrate our rowing success, as it's damn hard and damn competitive. But we should also recognise the All Whites and the Basketballers coming 4th in a world championship (2002).. The scale of that event is so much bigger.

Not according to @nzzps post, no.

Rugby is better - but it's not got the global reach of soccer.
Soccer is ridiculously simple to play - any number of players, anything round and not crazily hard, and you've got a game.
